Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Film/Media Production
Be part of the School of Film, Media & Theatre’s growing faculty at Georgia 
State University, an enterprising Research I university in Atlanta. Our next 
Assistant Professor in Film/Media Production (whose work focuses on issues of 
identity and difference) will play a central role in the school’s contributions 
to Georgia State’s strategic goals of highlighting the arts and media as vital 
to the quality of all major cities and demonstrating that students from all 
backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. 
Opportunities for support for faculty include intramural research grants, 
summer funding, teaching release time, graduate research assistants, travel 
funds, and assistance in pursuing external funding.
The Film and Media faculty and the Theatre faculty at Georgia State University 
merged in July 2017 to form the School of Film, Media & 
Theatre. The new school has over 900 majors and houses a 
Ph.D. program in Moving Image Studies, master’s programs in film/media 
production and studies, and undergraduate programs in film/media and theatre. 
We are located in the heart of the third largest media-producing capital in 
America. The School of Film, Media & Theatre is dedicated to broadening the 
range of voices heard in American culture (including perspectives that are 
often marginalized because of race, gender, age, class, rural status, gender 
identity, ethnicity, body image, disability, sexual orientation, military 
status, religion, or political orientation) and to critically examining the 
functions of mainstream visual storytelling in our culture.
The School of Film, Media & Theatre is part of the College of the 
Arts, which was established in 2016 and also includes 
the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, the 
School of Music, the Center for Collaborative & 
International Arts (CENCIA), and the Center for 
Educational Partnerships in Music. In addition to offering some of the 
university’s most popular majors, the college connects faculty and students 
with Atlanta’s thriving arts scene and booming film and music industries.

Responsibilities

Candidates who work in fiction or documentary, mainstream or alternative forms, 
long or short forms, theatrical/broadcast/cable/festival/web distributed media 
are invited to apply. The selected candidate is expected to maintain an active 
research/creative agenda that engages with issues of identity and difference; 
to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses in her/his preferred mode of 
media production and his/her area of professional filmmaking expertise; and to 
participate in service at the department, college, and/or university levels. 
The selected candidate will contribute to the School’s efforts to broaden the 
voices who have access to and expertise in creating media.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications

•M.F.A. or Ph.D. degree in film/media production or a related field (in 
hand by August 1, 2018);

•An emerging record of creative activity dealing with 
identity/difference;

•Ability to teach at least one fundamental production activity (e.g., 
cinematography, editing, sound, lighting, effects, producing/preproduction, new 
media) at the university level


Preferred Qualifications

•   An established record of creative activity dealing with 
identity/difference;

•   Experience in teaching at least one fundamental production activity 
(e.g., cinematography, editing, sound, lighting, effects, 
producing/preproduction, new media) at the university level;

•   A demonstrated commitment to diversity
