[Frameworks] Sundry film stuff for the asking

I'm going to be getting rid of a bunch of stuff, even a 16mm viewer and

You can read about it here:

This will happen next week, and I'm happy to get it off my hands and not

If anyone has suggestions about the OCN (both color and Black and White)

 double perf versus double 8mm

I always thought you could shoot double 8mm in 16mm, and when it was
processed you would just have an extra set of unused perfs (might be a
problem with frame lines if you were off by a perf.) I never tried it,
so I might be wrong, but I thought the perfs were the same size.

On another note. I have a Redlake Hycam, and would really be happy if
someone wanted to come take it off my hands. While I'd prefer a 501C for
tax purposes, in the end I'd like it to go to a good home that would use it.

I'm located in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Just shoot it with any film camera pointed to an LCD screen such as you

This does work, but is not perfect.

The reason you don't get the dreaded roll bar on an LCD screen is
because the pixels are always on. Granted there is a florescent light
source for the LCD. On a CRT, the picture is written on, and then
blanked, before the next image is written on to the screen. This is done
alternating lines, first odd lines (1,3,5,7,9,11 - 525) then even
(2,4,6,8,10-524.) So the image is broken into two fields - running at
59.94. So since the camera is running at 24, the roll bar is the
shifting blanking interval.

With an LCD screen, although you don't see the big nasty roll bar, there
is a small sizzling line that passes through the image.

If you can get a hold of The Arri 35 Book (Jon Fauer) there is a great
section on shooting off a TV screen.

There is a Nikon Cool scan product that I believe has an attachment that

Make sure you set the sound to 48 khz, i think 32khz is the other option

Ugghh 32 khz, also known as 12 bit. Because the cam manufacturers

16bit, 48Khz for sound in DV cameras.

Hi, the big question is what is important to you?

Sync Sound, or features like being able to do single frame and rewind in
camera.

Also, do you want to work with 100 daylight loads or 400 foot?

How important is hand holdability?

Uh It is horrendous and sadly many people do not notice, I even

DLP projection is always on so there is no blackness in which the mind
can chew over the image it just saw, which brings the experince out of
the realm of cinema for me.

Those two reasons are the most enduring reasons for film distribution:

1. The viewing state from film projection is different from Electronic
Cinema.

2. In Film projection the bulb illumination can be off, but a good print
is a good print, with electronic distribution (especially to the home)
forget it, things will never look the way you intend.

These two points are not enough to overcome the costs involved in making
prints and shipping them.

Likewise, the idea that a good print guarantees a good projection is
 equally ridiculous.

Aaron, I believe that there is a difference in the experience of
watching film projected as opposed to electronic projection.

I believe that part of that difference is that you sit in the dark for
half the time, and in that space between the frames it is where Cinema
lives. Yes there are 2 and three bladed shutters that break the 24 fps
into 48 and 72 flicks per second, there is still black moments in there
which are not noticed, but make a difference as compared to not having
ANY moments without images bombarding your retina and brain. You don't
have to believe that, it doesn't shake my view of the universe if others
do not agree with me.

Some people find Gate weave to be desirable, I'm not really one of them,
as long as it isn't heinious or distracting, it doesn't really bother me
(except for credits - uh.)

As far as the prints, the point to make is that with a print - if it is
a good print, you have eliminated many variables that exist in
electronic projection.

The potential Bulb problems exist for both. However there are far more
adjustments available to an electronic cinema projector that will affect
the image than a film projector. Which was my point.

I don't expect film projection to survive as the mainstream form of
distribution, there are too many other factors that favor electronic
distribution.

There are positives and negatives to both.

Hi:
So or flying, you can find a link to the TSA site on my page

http://www.gladstonefilms.com/links2.html

I didn't see anything about bulbs. I expect that the TSA might buss more
over carrying fragile mercury containing bulbs in the passenger
compartment. You might try calling a bulb manufacturer and ask them that
question - which leads me to recommend Lowell lighting. Lowell also
makes compact flourescents that are flicker free, have a High CRI and
are daylight balanced (no green.) SO I'd recommend giving them a call.

My gut reaction says that there isn't that much of a pressure difference
and I don't think the bulbs will crack from that - more likely from
rough handling so pack them well. People have been shipping tungsten
halogen bubls for a long time in lights with no issues from pressure and
the tungsten halogen bulbs are under a lot of pressure.

certainly having some affect on this group.

Please G-d, No more Film Versus Video (Electronic Capture) because really:

WHY DOES IT MATTER TO ANYONE ELSE IF SOMEONE CHOOSES TO USE FILM OR
OTHER MEDIA TO CREATE THEIR WORK?

Personally I'm dumfounded by why anyone would want to shoot Super 8 or
9.5mm, but that is just me. The fact that I don't understand why anyone
would want to use that medium with all the other choices doesn't stop me
from appreciating the work in it.

I can't stand 30 fps, and prefer 24 fps. That's how I phrase it, you
want to shoot at 30 fps, or any frame rate, that is your choice, enjoy.

My dream (probably unfulfilled) is to make a still frame with the Niepce
process.

Anyone who wants to tell me what medium I can or cannot use should go
BLEEP themselves.

I was going to say it is odd that there isn't a sync sound rig available

I donated my Aaton to a school a few years ago. Most rental houses will
require insurance, often the school will provide that, so you will have
to coordinate with your school.

In Manhattan you can check out Film Friends, I don't remember what
their insurance requirements are. You might also try Du-all camera and
Hit and Run Productions. I'm not sure what the requirements are for
them, but if you have insurance (either yourself or through your school)
then you can go anywhere.

Hope this helps.

I've a lovely old 5.7mm kinoptik and a 385mm Century Tele athenar, both
in PL mount, if you need some lenses to rent.

A few others I'd pretty much give away (Like $20 bucks) to someone who
could use them.

supplementing what I'm saying? I'll go with the former, since debate is

Cool, let's have fun, because there is no point in getting all upset.
I'm neither right nor wrong, just a seeker.

re: POINT 1: ones and zeroes aren't analog representations of on and
off. You could more fruitfully say that on and off are mechanical
representations of 1 and 0, since the binary number system stands in the
abstract, like the decimal or roman system.

The way I understand it the 1 and the zero come from video and waveform
monitors, where 0 was black, and 1 was White or full exposure. This
was of course for an analog signal. I know the video scale is measured
as I.R.E. and the scale is 0 to 100 (or actually 7.5 to 100 in NTSC
land) but my understanding is that 100 I.R.E. correlated to 1 volt.
Digital is strictly an ON/OFF voltage states. This can be represented by
ots and dashes, ones and zeros, but through the wires, it is all on off
voltage states - the numbers 1 and zero are not being sent through the
wires.

I can transmit the same information to you by reciting ones and zeroes
over a tin-can telephone as I could by sending an email. You would have
to translate them into ASCII text in order to read the message, which
you could do with a printed reference card. On and off would not be
 needed during that process.

Yes, but then in reciting ones and zeroes you are speaking them, and
thus sending an analog signal. :-)

In a digital process, noise floor and strength of signal are eliminated
with error checking. A digital signal doesn't degrade, it corrupts, it
becomes unreadable or noisy and has to be re-transmitted.

No argument.

When sampling, the ANALOG value is converted to a number and this is
sent digitally. Copying an Analog waveform it seems is not so
clean/perfect as you point out. Send an Analog signal over a wire, and
it may degrade. So what reads as a nice curve, may shrink or grow or
change, but not that much.

But back to digital degredation - through Fiber optic Digital signals
can be sent quite a distance, but through copper - not so much. Remember
we are not sending numbers (not sending ones and zeroes) we are sending
On off states, which when they are received are converted into numeric
values. But if there is a problem with the wires, or the transmission
distance is too great -USB is limited I believe to about 25 feet. Well,
a voltage state of 1 volt could be considered on and a voltage state of
zero as off - but what if you get a voltage state of .5? Is that from
noise in the wire? Yes Error correction and such, but again, not sending
a one and zero, just sending voltage states through the wire - light
pulses through fibre optic cable.

  This is one of
the reasons it challenges analog-lovers who also love degradation and
imperfection. Noise is not the same as fading.

To quote spider robinson, who was referencing william gibson,

I remember when sky the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel,
 didn't mean blue sky.

re: POINT 2: if you're saying that all imagers are analog, that's true
in the sense that the light waves coming in through the lens are analog,
but in a digital process they get sampled at some point.

Yes, the imagers are analog - Electronic imagers use A to D converters
(Analog to Digital) to get the info of of the chips, CCD's etc. With
Film yep considered Analog (maybe there is a different word for it.)
Electronic - starts out as analog and converted to Digital (voltage
states) for transmission and storage.

  In an analog
process, there's no sampling anywhere; waves are recorded as waves with
more or less fidelity, like film exposure or signal on tape. But
sampling is different: however it's recorded, the sample isn't a wave.

Of course things also end in an analog way, either when they become
light and sound waves from the projector and speaker or at least when
they hit your retina or ear drum.

Sounds and looks good. :-)
