[Frameworks] shooting and hand processing expired film

2012-08-10 Thread katherine Bauer
Hi Frameworks I was wondering if you had any tips for shooting and then for
the hand processing of expired black and white Tri-X film.
Like, does the film tend to want more or less light when it is old and was
not stored properly at all...
Does it take more time or less time in comparison to good film with the
developer? I wanted to push this film like 2 or 3 stops is that something
that is harder to achieve - pushing many stops - when the film is old?
Also it may have vinegar syndrome or that may just be a musty smell. Does
Reversal or Prints stock get vinegar syndrome - does it spread to reels and
cameras and then to other film?
That is a lot - any tips on any of it would be fun.

 Dear all,

Unfortunately I lost contacts to Standish Lawder earlier this year upon
his move to Petaluma. The supposedly new phone number I find does
not work. Can anybody, please, help? Offline preferred.

 Thanks

Hey brother. Did you see if PPECS at IC still has any? Try emailing Phil
 if you haven't yet.

 Hope all is well!

I'm developing a list of links to external information/education
resources pertaining to Direct Animation, Handmade Film, HandProcessing,
DIY filmmaking or anything just plain fascinating. If you have any
suggestions for things i should incorporate I would love to hear them!

 Hi Eric,

Please see my comprehensive article on hand processing:

2012-08-10 Thread Scott Dorsey
Shoot a test, process a test. Just take fifty feet or so and run it and
see what it's like. You may need to open an extra stop or so.

When you develop the test, look at the edges of the film where it has not
been exposed. Compare with some other processed negative... it should be
clear and not grey.

If it is grey and fogged, add some benzotriaole to your developer. This
will reduce the effective film speed but it will also reduce the fog.
Photographer's Formulary has the stuff in stock.

Vinegar syndrome is death it is a very distinctive odor and not like
a musty smell. The acidic gas produced will cause other film to go vinegar
if it's stored nearby. I have never seen vinegar syndrome on old unexposed
negative but I suppose it's possible.
