Hello frameworkers,
I’ve been given some reels of 16mm magnetic film and was wondering if anyone
knows whether it’s possible to remove the magnetic coating somehow? Have tried
bleach and water which has done nothing.
Thanks,
Mary

It's designed to be as hard as possible to remove the coating as possible,
though you could try acetone if it's polyester-based stuff. If it's acetate,
acetone will dissolve the base.

May not be worth the trouble. The base itself may be opaque... Try scrapping
with a razor blade to see.

Thanks Scott I’ll try the acetone, that’s basically nail varnish remover?
Francisco, the base is clear as I’ve scratched at it with a pin. Wondering if
there are chemicals which will remove the coating like when bleach can just
remove the emulsion from film, but not sure what the magnetic
The magnetic coating is barn paint. It's ground up rust in vehicle that
keeps it sticking to the base.
If you're looking for clear base, though, it would seem a lot easier to
trade the more-expensive magfilm to someone for less-expensive clear base.
