Based in New York City, the Coop distributes experimental film and video works by an array of international artists to educational institutions, theaters, museums, and other cultural venues throughout the world, and regularly works to preserve rare and underrepresented films from its collection. It is also an active exhibition space for avant-garde film, video, and new media art, as well as a regular venue for educational workshops that provide independent artists with access to affordable media production courses. Since it was founded in 1961, the Coop has grown to distribute over 5,000 titles by its 952 members. It is currently embarking on a project to digitize its expansive celluloid collection in an effort to make avant-garde cinema available to new audiences, and is also in the process of digitizing its collection of paper materials, which spans the 20th century, to provide film scholars and members of the general public with access to these rare archival documents.
