Strand played a vital role in the 1960s Bay Area filmmaking community both through her work and her involvement in the cofounding of Canyon Cinema—which would become the San Francisco Cinematheque—with friend Bruce Baillie in 1961. Strand also taught film for twenty-five years at Occidental College in Los Angeles, influencing a generation of filmmakers. Meanwhile, she made frequent summer trips to Mexico, where she shot many of her films over a thirty-year career. The Harvard Film Archive is proud to present a near complete retrospective of Chick Strand’s groundbreaking filmography, which includes her first film—made with her son Eric Strand, Eric and the Monsters—to her masterpiece Soft Fiction, and up through to her last film (edited posthumously) Señora con flores / Woman with Flowers. These works, commissioned from a wide range of composers/artists, were conceived of as a unique way to tell compelling stories through music in a format that is most relevant to our multi-screen culture. The videos, ranging from 10-20 minutes, will be screened as one continuous program. Hosted at UNEXPOSED Microcinema in downtown Durham. Brendan and Jeremy Smyth of UNEXPOSED Microcinema have put together what they call the UNX Collective, a team of individuals from around Durham to pre-screen films from an open call for submissions and select two hours worth of short movies to premiere at UNXFEST. The UNX Collective met every Saturday for the past two months to watch, choose, and finalize two film programs that feature 11 official selections from filmmakers around the world. After these movies premiere at UNEXPOSED Microcinema on May 7th, they will then be transferred to a DVD and sent to other microcinemas across the world, libraries, and also to professors around the United States to be incorporated in their curriculum of experimental film. The Smyth brothers have also done something a bit different with the structure of this particular fest; a traditional film festival will run its course in a weekend, a three day long film extravaganza. They have taken these three days and spread them throughout the year, labeling each installment UNXFEST 1.1 (May 7th), UNXFEST 1.2 (September 17th), and finishing with UNXFEST 1.3 (December 3rd). Her goal is to transform Western ideological systems through audio/visual stimulation to produce new paradigms. She will be performing new works with generative software to drive multi-image projection in real time using sound and light data. She will also be showing her interactive piece "Seer" and previous experimental films.
