JASON LESCALLEET + VWLS
"For twenty years, Jason Lescalleet has been making electro-acoustic sound
work, using all manner of source material to engage listeners in both site and
narrative by providing a rich and physical sense of place." - Bomb Magazine
Since establishing himself as a preeminent voice in contemporary
electro-acoustic study, Jason Lescalleet has exploded the notion of what is
possible within the realm of tape- based music. His recorded catalog
acknowledges a diversity of application, from lo-fi reel-to-reel soundscaping
and work for hand-held cassette machines, to digital sampling and computer
generated composition. Lescalleet's live actions further expand his ouevre to
include work with video, dance, performance art and multi-media concerns. In
the past two decades, Lescalleet has gradually and painstakingly compiled a
compelling discography on notable labels such as Erstwhile, RRR, Intransitive
Recordings, Kye, Celebrate Psi-Phenomenon, Hanson Records, Chondritic Sound,
and most
recently via his own Glistening Examples imprint. He has collaborated with
Kevin Drumm, Aaron Dilloway, Graham Lambkin, Phill Niblock, Joe Colley, John
Hudak, Rafael Toral, Thomas Ankersmit, and CM Von Hausswolff, among others, and
during this time he's built a solid reputation for delivering a visceral live
experience in concert.-bio via New Music USA *** VWLS is the moniker of

SHAPESHIFTERS CINEMA PRESENTS GUILLERMO GALINDO AND GUSTAVO VAZQUEZ
"When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not
sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending 50's and 60's retro
fashion, greasy food, immoral dances, contagious rhythms, hedonism, sex,
borracheras and unnecessary violence. They’re bringing those problems with us.
They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing their rascuache morals. They’re
uncontrollable. But some, like artists Vazquez and Galindo I assume, are good
people.” -- Donald Trump. Grrrr!...Gustavo Vazquez + gal*in_dog (Guillermo
Galindo) reunite to present the 20/20 sound/visual pus-retro Mexican rendezvous
(Estar Guars Too). Bootleg illegal movies, telenovelas, invade the USA.
Suggestive dances and mambo erupts into transcendental techno cunnilingus y
puro reventón. El sound galindog y el video Vazquez collide with the percussive
rhythms of AK 47s as Trompitas cries for help.

A YEAR FROM MONDAY: RECENT WORK BY WENHUA SHI
Opening: Friday, June 17th, 6pm-9pm Screening: Saturday, June 18th, 7pm
Closing: September 3rd, 2016 "Not knowing exactly what day a year from
Monday-the day eight of us had arranged to meet in Mexico-would be, I decided
it was early June 1967." -John Cage Taking its title from a collection of
writings by John Cage, Squeaky Wheel presents a mini-survey of recent work by
Wenhua Shi. Cage's quote refers to a travel meet-up set by him and
friends-unstable but with poetic determination-that never came to fruition. As
the date approaches, and friends drop out, Cage's resolve loosens and finds
nuance: "We don't have to make plans to be together… Circumstances do it for
us." Shi's work-utilizing newer technologies like video mapping, video games,
and real time computer generation-tread a balance of determination and chance,
creating circumstances within which his audience can explore their relationship
to the works. Influenced by Chinese culture and avant-garde art and film, Shi's
work evokes egalitarian relationships between viewer and art, creating spaces
for pleasure and meditation. Singing to the Sky (2015) is an interactive
installation where visitors can vocalize into a microphone, which is then
interpreted live as Chinese symbols in video projection. Fishing, Those Who Are
Willing to Hook (2015) takes a Chinese proverb and transports it into a
meditative video-game. The exhibit will also see the unveiling of two new
pieces, the video mapped work Wave Line (2016), along with the real-time
computer generated Computer will not make any more boring art (2016). A
commissioned essay by Evan Meaney accompanies the exhibition. On Saturday, June
18th, Shi will present a selection of his work made for the black box, followed
by a conversation between Shi and Ekrem Serdar.

RE-VISIONS: HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT
FILMMAKER IN PERSON! Descended from the wild world of public access television,
Jeff Krulik is a one-of-a-kind ethnographer of the offbeat and bizarre. His
lo-fi, endlessly bootlegged videos capture all manner of American oddballs,
obsessives, and eccentrics – from zonked-out heavy metal fanatics to Washington
DC’s most avid porn collector and self-identified “archivist.” Born in 1961 and
raised in Bowie, Maryland, Krulik graduated from the University of Maryland in
1983 with a degree in English. Initially interested in a career in the music
industry, he changed directions when he discovered the creatively unrestricted
universe of public access television. By 1985, he was running the MetroVision
studio in Capitol Heights, Maryland, where he used the station’s equipment to
make one of his first and most celebrated videos, the morbidly fascinating
account of frizzy-haired, stumbling-drunk suburban metalheads, HEAVY METAL
PARKING LOT, in 1986. In tandem with the University of
Maryland’s year-long museum exhibition, “Heavy Metal Parking Lot: The 30-Year
Journey of a Cult Film Sensation,” Anthology brings Krulik to NYC to celebrate
HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT’s 30th anniversary, and to present his most recent
work, LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED HERE, about a mysterious Led Zeppelin concert that
may or may not have taken place in 1969, alongside other favorites and
surprises from his vast ethnographic archive of fringe pop-culture portraiture.
“Krulik may be public access’s only true success story. He perceived the weird
essence of the medium, then moved beyond it. Emerging from that 1980s no-zone,
he has been able to create his own brand of television art: documentaries in
the service of a unique screwball populism.” –Ed Halter For more info about the
exhibition at the Gallery of the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library,
University of Maryland, visit

PROGRAM 1: HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT TURNS 30!: On May 31, 1986, Judas Priest
fans
were filmed in their natural environment, a concert arena parking lot in
suburban Maryland. Traded widely via bootlegged VHS tapes, this portrait of
“stoned worshippers at the shrine of their own bewilderment” (Roger Ebert)
tailgating before a Judas Priest concert in suburban Maryland became an
unlikely cult sensation and is now remembered as one of the greatest rock ‘n’
roll documentaries of all time. John Heyn & Jeff Krulik HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT
1986, 17 min, video. Preserved by Anthology Film Archives with support from the
Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Plus: HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT
ALUMNI: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT GOES TO CHINA And a
hodgepodge of other surprises from Krulik’s inexhaustible PARKING LOT archive…
Total running time: ca. 80 min.

DOWN A HARD HOLE
Come with us on a journey through the netted present. Soft flesh and precious
metals, horse breeding, floods, and family. This is a selection of work about
how we tell a story, about how stories cross boundaries and move across
generations. Within brand new video work by a few familiar names, the night is
centered around and grounded by Abraham Ravett’s The March, a series of
conversations with his mother, filmed over 13 years, about her recollections of
the 1945 'Death March' from Auschwitz. It is a tender and insistent portrait of
a relationship that will stay with you for years. All That Is Solid is a
techno-graphic study of e-recycling and neo-colonial mining filmed in the
Agbogbloshie electronic waste ground in Accra and illegal gold mines of Ghana.
The video constructs a mise-en-abyme as critique in order to dispel the
capitalist myth of the immateriality of new technology — thus revealing the
mineral weight with which the Cloud is grounded to its earthly origins. Dear
Lorde is a portrait of a teenaged girl trying to become a "worthwhile person."
The video is narrated by the letters the protagonist writes to various famous
people she admires, including Jane Goodall, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the New
Zealand teen pop star Lorde. Revealing and frightening, Hard as Opal is “rich
accumulation of narratives held together by questions concerning the nature of
objectification, loneliness, and dissociative fantasy” (Brett Price). This is
an outdoor screening, under the stars, and will also be Cinema Project's final
screening of the spring 2016 season.

RE-VISIONS: LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED HERE
NYC PREMIERE OF FINAL CUT! LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED HERE (2014, 81 min, video) 1969.
Man lands on the moon. Half a million strong at Woodstock. Sesame Street makes
its debut…and Led Zeppelin perform in the gym of a youth center in front of 50
confused teenagers in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. Or did they?
Krulik offers his take on an enduring Maryland legend, a concert alleged to
have taken place on January 20, 1969, during the first Presidential
Inauguration of Richard Nixon. LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED HERE features interviews
with rock writers, musicians, and fans, and several who claim they were
witnessing history that night.

RE-VISIONS: JEFF'S PEOPLE
PROGRAM 3: JEFF’S PEOPLE: Since the 1980s, Krulik has steadfastly made dozens
of captivatingly quirky video pieces documenting compellingly offbeat
characters. In all these videos, Krulik displays a raggedly energetic style
marked by a tendency simply to let the camera roll as his subjects perform for
it, a penchant for deliberately cheesy FX (wipes abound), and a genuine
affection for the eccentric personalities he chronicles. Here we present a
selection of our all-time favorite portraits of characters we are lovingly
calling “Jeff’s People.” Program includes: KING OF PORN (1996, 7 min, video)
CELEBRITY UNDERWEAR (1998/2013, 7.5 min, video) I CREATED LANCELOT LINK (1999,
15.5 min, video) PANCAKE (2000, 4.5 min, video) OBSESSED WITH JEWS (2000, 8
min, video) KING OF PORN 2: THE RETIREMENT (2000, ? min, digital) THE
PSYCHEDELIC SECRETARY (2007, 4.5 min, video) And others, including previously
unseen footage from Krulik’s portrait of DC photographer and ‘Cowboy Poet,’
Chris
Earnshaw. Total running time: ca. 80 min.
