2013-01-10 Thread Alex
The Most Terrible Time of My Life and the rest of the Miku Hama series feature
a detective with an office in a projection room.

The bad guy hideout in Youth of The Beast is sort of in a projector booth.

In Branded to Kill there's a good scene with a 16mm projector which ends up
projecting onto Joe Shishido's forehead. All of these movies have Joe Shishido
in them, actually.

2013-01-10 Thread Andy Ditzler
Famously, the end of the newsreel sequence in Citizen Kane has visible
light rays from the booth.
There's a projection sequence in 8 1/2.
Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy project home movies in Adam's Rib.
If memory serves, Colin Firth is seen projecting the final scene of Touch
of Evil in Apartment Zero.
I believe there's a home movie projection scene in Carnal Knowledge - or
perhaps it's slides.
There are several projection room sequences in Andzrej Wajda's Man of
Marble.
There's a projection sequence in Chronicle of a Summer, but I can't
remember if the booth is visible in that.

Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer (Thom Andersen) - some discussion of
Muybridge's Zoopraxiscope

Color Film (Standish Lawder) - no projectionist or booth, but this short
consists of colored film running through a projector

David Holzman's Diary (Jim McBride) - film shooting and editing

We Can't Go Home Again (Nicholas Ray, not as sure about this one)

Arrebato (Ivan Zulueta) - again someone projecting film in their own

You've probably already noted the opening sequence of Bergman's *Persona*.

Doesn't the killer in *Peeping Tom* project his own films?

Moments in a few Scorsese films come to mind I think you get a glimpse
of the booth in the porn theater in *Taxi Driver*. Maybe a few scenes in *The
Aviator *-- I remember film projected on a body.. a la *Kundun* a few years
prior. One of the early episodes of *Boardwalk Empire* features a few dudes
watching some stag (nitrate) films on a hand-cranked projector that
eventually gets caught in the gate and catches on fire... might be the
first episode (directed by lil' Marty)... *Hugo* also has some hand-cranked
projector action...

Do we see the booth in *The Last Picture Show* (1971)?

Self-reflexivity? How about Morgan Fisher's *Projection Instructions *
(1976)?

Scene from *National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation *-- Chevy Chase in the
attic...

I haven't scene the new Ethan Hawke vehicle *Sinister* (2012) -- the
previews show him projecting a lot of 8mm and Super8, then destroying it
all. And yes, he's wearing a Bennington College shirt

the list goes on and on...

Hello there,

I'm trying to compile a list of films featuring projectionists or projection
boothes. So far it feels like there's a lot less that I thought there was, so I
wondered if anybody had any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Michael
