I have a Sipura 3000 VoIP adapter behind the Technicolor modem, because
the built-in VoIP doesn't work in bridged mode. But most people use
mobiles these days and barely use landlines. Businesses might want to
run Asterisk and use VoIP handsets.

What interests me about it is that it does firmware updating automatically

reading flash chips or doing traffic snooping, there's not much I can do to tell
it's not being malicious.

I also have a Technicolor modem on Internode NBN, and I always put my
modem into bridged mode and use a FOSS server (typically Linux or BSD)
as the actual router.  I'm currently using an old Dell "small business
server" that I got for free, but even a Raspberry Pi would work as a
single-armed router.  That probably won't protect you against actively
malicious firmware, but it should mitigate against a lot of
vulnerabilities because it's much harder to externally contact a router
in bridged mode.

Yes, and has done for a long time. The only issue is that sometimes the
UI restarts immediately after unlocking the phone and I have to unlock a
second time. Otherwise everything works perfectly.

I'm still using my S3 with CM 11 and getting regular security updates.
You just need to switch to the "nightly" (not really) updates. CM 13 is
currently being worked on as well.

It's been years since I've thought about the old RealMedia format!

Here's a sample file:

VLC and Mplayer can both handle it.

I'm really glad that you're keen Scott. This is something I've always

help us bring in students. I'm also hopefully meeting up with the
Electron Workshop folks next week, so that might be a possibility too.
I'll see if I can get any interest from Melbourne Uni too. If you have
 any contacts, let us know.

Might also be worth considering the Footscray Maker Lab:

Fonts are definitely not a software program, although some software
and document files such as PDFs may optionally include them.

That depends on the format. Some fonts are instructions to a font
renderer, and therefore definitely are a software program in a defined
font language.
