My T520 had the same issue and it was fixed at least two years ago. Works fine
for me. Would be nice to see come confirmation from a W530 owner, but they are
likely pretty rare by now as all are at least 6 years old. Then again, my T520
works fine, if a bit memory limited, after 7 years.

On my X240 with 11-CURRENT (drm-i915-update-38 actually), acpi_ibm is useless
as well.

The sound volume keys are passed to Xorg as XF86Audio{Lower,Raise}Volume, but
the brightness keys aren't. The lower brightness key just resets the brightness
to maximum, the raise brightness key does nothing. I think these keys should be
passed to Xorg as XF86MonBrightness{Down,Up}!

acpi_video brightness adjustment (sysctl hw.acpi.video.lcd0.brightness) works
though. graphics/intel-backlight works too.

Thanks for suggestion about acpi_video ... but it makes the whole case wven
more 'fun' ;)

After loading acpi_video module, the hardware buttons for brightness does not
work anymore and after kldunload acpi_video system reboots instantly.

Regards,
vermaden

Other thinkpads that use Intel integrated graphics are able to control LCD
brightness via the KMS module after r270516 in HEAD (merged to stable/10 in
279961 which is after 10.1). However, those do not use acpi_ibm, but do work
with acpi_video. On my x220 the following things appear to work in acpi_ibm:

'mute' sysctl (can write to it to mute, and the mute button change its state,
also writing to it changes the mute light)
'thinklight' sysctl
'fan_speed' sysctl
