Just wanted to add that my problem is likely unrelated as I've found my issue.
I had to disable tpm in bios (or load the tpm kernel module).

I've fixed it for gmirror, but as mentioned, the other geom man pages also need
that. Not sure if that is necessary in the age of devmatch, but for
