The VM has only one CPU. I do not use make -j, it does not make sense on a
single CPU machine.
How much swap space should I add? 10GB, 20GB?

ctfconvert -L VERSION -g vers.o
linking kernel.full
ctfmerge -L VERSION -g -o kernel.full ...
I see in top(1) that ctfmerge is huge,

when we encounter what we think is incomplete multibyte sequence at the end of
the line buffer or at EOF
