There is no problem FreeBSD 12.1-p5
Latest SVN base/stable/12 kernel produces this problem.

Are people using -j here to build /usr/src/rescue, and if so, with which
setting? I've run a plain 'make' on a VM with 4 cores at first, then 2 cores,
but the resulting /usr/obj/usr/src/rescue

Okay, I can reproduce, and it appears to be something in
usr.bin/printf/printf.c, which gets built as part of sh. In particular, in the
printf_doformat function.
One version gives:

I currently use the lazy approach and build complete releases.
Obviously this makes bisecting slow but I haven't had time to
simplify the steps yet.
I've only seen the issue on 11.x but haven't tested
