Tried the patch referred to above as well here and it built properly up until
the link step and then it failed the linker step on my system and failed to
compile.

If you rebuild from sources, then please use poudriere/tinderbox to avoid
random errors from building on a live system.
There should be pre-built packages for FreeBSD 8.4-10.0 available
