I have an 'Epson perfection 2450 Photo' scanner which gets found using firewire as:
pass0 at sbp0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
pass0: EPSON GT-9700 1.05 Fixed Processor SCSI-4 device
pass0: 50.000MB/s transfers
and xsane gives during startup:

[epson] Requesting extended status
