I have seen this for about a month or two on more than one machine.
xdm works fine.
Rebuilds over some time have no effect.
I have now built the world and wdm with -g and still have all the
source and objects.
Kernel config attached.
What further info would you like ?

Try building without PAM support.
When wdm breaks for me, rebuilding with no PAM generally fixes it.
