system hanging after the GEOM initialization without any indication of
debug output. The only clue I have is that it sounds like my zip-100
was accessed right before the hang.

I had (last time I checked) the same problem with my LS-120 (a 120Mb ATAPI
floppy drive). Putting a disk in it during boot worked as a workaround and
that allowed me to boot. I've since taken out atapicam because this got old
fairly quickly. I think this goes back to when ATAng came in.

When it works, is that when you have been using it in another operating

IIRC, some of these multi-function devices require a code sending to them by
the printer driver to tell them to behave like printers (instead of being a
fax machine or a scanner or whatever). Unfortunately, finding out what that
code is and sending it can be tricky.

Lock up on boot with LS-120 and CURRENT

2003-10-29 Thread Mark Dixon
Hi,

Using todays current, I'm finding that FreeBSD locks up completely on
boot if I don't have a disk in my LS-120 drive. There is no panic, it
just seems to freeze. I have included a dmesg from a boot with a disk in
the drive and indicated the point at which it freezes without the disk
in. It worked fine on 5.1-RELEASE. I have atapicam in the kernel.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

I've seen that too, although my problem was with my Alcatel Speedtouch

I'djust retrieved usr from a backup to get round it, and put it down to
the perils of -current, but if there is really a problem, I can

Sorry to do a me too, but I have a similar problem after a cvsup midday
on the 13th September. The previous kernel was pre-ATAng.
The machine panic'd after inserting a friends wireless PCMCIA card
(but that's probably another unrelated issue), rebooted and left
me in single user after failing to automatically run fsck. Prior to
that it had booted fine when the disks were clean.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to copy down the exact error messages
it printed in the failed fsck_ufs. But they were definitely of the form
CANNOT WRITE BLK: and the fsck then died with a SIGABRT.
A manual fsck of the disks has got me back up and running and the machine
now boots multiuser without fsck terminating abnormally, but still seems
unable to resolve the inconsistencies on-disk.
http://www.silent.co.uk/freebsd/

I will try to investigate further but please get in touch if there is more
information I can provide.

2003-09-06 Thread Mark Dixon
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is a known problem, but I don't see any references
to it. I've gone from 5.1-RELEASE to todays CURRENT to try to get rid of
a different panic (no news on that yet), but I have hit this one.

If I boot my system with no floppy in the LS-120, the system panics
where atapicam creates da0 for it. If there is a disk in the drive, it
works fine.

As yet, I havn't got the details of the panic, but if this is of
interest to anyone here, I will be willing to provide them with them
(they wil have to be be copied out by hand, so I'm lothe to do it if
nobody is interested).

Sorry if this email is a little vague, its been a long week.
