OOOPS - portupgrade/Swapfile/???

2003-04-04 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hey guys,

Just did a CVSup, and did a portupgrade -rRa.

I watched it install libxml update and fontconfig and apache2. I then left it
to its things and went to get a coffee

On return, I got the login screen for KDE???

So I logged in and tried to run portupgrade -rRa again just to confirm
everything was done and it returned me to the login screen. I rebooted into
console and ran the same command. I then get repeated application kills due
to swap file full...Never had that before.

Watching with swapinfo, my 500Mb (256 Mb Ram) swapfile just fills up...on
stopping portupgrade, swap file is emptied...

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks,
Anthony

Did portupgrade get updated then?

I am not using gnome...

The only thing I can think of is that an update has created a loop within
itself, thereby launching subsequent sorts...I get 10 or so sorts, about
20-30 make's, kill them they come back...

I have exactly the same thing, just my machine can cope with it a bit
better as I have 512M physical and 1gig swap. It's currently running a
portupgrade -rai and doing all the recent gnome commits. The first 6 or 7
upgrades of installed ports went without a hitch but since then at the
points where it says Building and Registering installation for
  I get this:

 OK? [yes]
 --- Build of x11/gnomesession started at: Fri, 04 Apr 2003 11:04:52 +0100
 --- Building '/usr/ports/x11/gnomesession'
make: Max recursion level (500) exceeded.: Resource temporarily unavailable

and the physical ram in use just goes up and up and up until it runs out
and then the swap space does the same. After a few minutes (luckily before
it runs out) it stops. All the ram is free'd and the portupgrade carries
 on.

During this time looking at a top it appears it's due to around ten
sort processes doing something or other at the time.

This looks more like a portupgrade issue rather than a -CURRENT issue
 however.

I guess this could be related to the problem Kris Kennaway just reported on

Sorry. I always assume people are on the same lists as me :)

 http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=605942+0+current/freebsd-ports

would explain the looping during package tool use.

You do not need the wrapper to login via kdm or gdm.

What version are you using of gdm? Versions prior to 2 of GDM can be launched
from ttys, but the latest versions require (are recommended???) the shell

Re: problem updating from 4.7 Stable do 5.0 Current

2003-03-31 Thread CARTER Anthony
Process:

Boot up normally with 4.7 kernel.

DO THIS:

rm -rf /usr/obj/* (removes compiled files)
rm -rf /tmp/*

Add COMPAT_FREEBSD4 to your kernel configuration file.

make buildworld
make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOURKERNELFILE
cp /usr/src/sys/${MACHINE}/conf/GENERIC.hints /boot/device.hints

(MACHINE = i386, powerpc, ia64 etc depending on architecture. check out the
directory first)

make installkernel KERNCONF=YOURKERNELFILE

#The next line installs the 5.x boot loader.
cd /usr/src/sys/boot; make install

reboot.

Hit a key at boot (other than Enter)
Type: boot -s

This will boot into single user mode with your new kernel.

fsck -p
mount -u /
mount -a

mergemaster -p
rm -rf /usr/include/g++
make installworld
mergemaster
reboot

PLEASE NOTE: Your should REALLY REALLY read the /usr/src/UPDATING file. All
the information given here is taken from that file...You should read that
file to find out if there are any particular entries that are relevent to
your platform. The first few pages are updates to versions of FreeBSD, you
can ignore these really and scroll to the bottom where the upgrade processes
are described.

Good Luck,
Anthony Carter

Yeah.

When booting the computer and it tells you to press Enter to boot or any other
blah blah, hit any key (not enter ;)) and type

boot -s name_of_4.7_kernel

this will boot into single usermode.

Then, do this:

fsck -p
mount -u /

Updated XFree86

2003-03-19 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi,

I updated XFree86 this morning after a cvsup using portupgrade -r...did
all packages for XFree86 (Server, libraries etc. etc.)

I now have a problem with GDM...

I can log in as root using the GDM, but if I log in as another user, it
pops a message up about my session not lasting longer than 10 seconds
and dumping me back to login. I get a client 5 rejected from local
host in my logs, and I get a run_session_chiled: Could not open
~/.xsession-errors on the console (even though it exists)...

I can stop the GDM running, and log in in the console and then run
startx, and that runs fine (that is how I am writing this... ;))

Anyone got any ideas?

I have vague recollections that your ~/.xsession should be marked
executable for xdm/gdm/kdm to work properly. Is it? I can't
recall if there is a special group added to /etc/group for the
xsession manager but if there is one your users may need to belong
to that group. Does gdm run SUID? Can't recall, but it may need to.
If 'startx' works then I assume you have 'wrapper' installed. I'm
not sure about the interaction of wrapper with gdm but you could
try de-installing it. Only takes a second to re-install it.

Re: XFree86-4.3.0,1 +wrapper-1.0_2

2003-03-19 Thread CARTER Anthony
I realise what wrapper is for, but if I type pkg_delete wrappe-1.0_2 at
the command line, I get:

pkg_delete: package 'wrapper-1.0_2' is required by these other packages
and may not be deinstalled:
XFree86-4.3.0,1

I never installed wrapper, but when I did a portupgrade to the latest
XFree, I guess it installed wrapper as a dependency...

I will forcably delete wrapper to see if that fixes the problem
(although I will try your solution first...I don't like deleting
dependencies)...

Thanks,

Anthony Carter

Excuse me, I'm a bonehead. You don't need to uninstall wrapper, just
 change this symbolic link:

 /usr/X11R6/bin/X@ - Xwrapper-4

 to this:

 /usr/X11R6/bin/X@ - XFree86

This *will* break 'startx' for ordinary users. 'Wrapper' is intended
to replace xdm and friends to create the .Xauthority in your home
 directory.

If xdm/gdm/kdm don't create the .Xauthority file then something else
must do it -- that something else is 'wrapper'.

You don't need to use both gdm and wrapper.

5.0 - CURRENT - KERNEL COMPILE - HELP

OK OK, I know this is cause I am missing (or added that I should not
have) something in my Kernel, but I have been re-compiling kernels for

can compile the GENERIC kernel, so I am sure that it is my kernel
configuration files fault...I kind of guess everything is compiling ok,
but something is amiss when linking...BUT WHAT (leaves to cry...)

Thanks for any clues, if you wish for my configuration file, just ask...

Hey,

Just tried yesterday to make a new kernel, but the new kernel bombs
(kernel panic) during boot. Oh well, just hang out with the kernel.old
for a while...but:

Today, with the CSV up about 5 mins ago, I can't even make a kernel! It
bombs out...With error code 1...

Can you tell me where I can get a trace, or how to set a trace, so I can
examine what is going wrong? As you can see, I am new to FBSD...but
eager to learn...

Just for Your Information

2003-03-13 Thread CARTER Anthony
Hi lads and lassies,

I just tried to do a build world that failed, so I tried re-running it
and it told me directory not empty (/usr/obj/usr/src/i386*)...Funny,
even though the first thing it does is an rm -rf of that directory...

So I tried to do it manually (of course as root), but nada. Told me that
the directory was not empty (rm -rf telling me THAT???)

Solution was to go into single user mode and rm -rf, but is this normal
behavior? I mean, there were no files in the tree, just
directories...Any info would be welcomed. This was with a CVSUP of about
2 hours ago...

Re: agp stuff

2003-03-12 Thread CARTER Anthony
Is your problem with sound or video?

If sound, then you need to recompile your Kernel as such:

mkdir /root/kernels
cp /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC /root/kernels/MYKERNEL
ln -s /root/kernels/MYKERNEL /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/MYKERNEL

now edit the /root/MYKERNEL and at the end add:

options pcm
options sbc (this one is for some on-Motherboard sound)

Now, for your Nvidia problem, there is a quick solution for you, add:

options VESA

And select VESA for your card in the XFree86 Config setup. This will get
you to a stage in which you can at least run X in a decent usable
resolution. Now for the compile:

cd /usr/src
make buildworld (build kernel may need to rely on this)
make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL
make installkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL

Hope this helps,

Anthony Carter
