DragonFlyBSD and NetBSD use newer GCC?
This is the first time I hear about that.
No doubt about major Linux distributions, though.
AFAIK, NetBSD does it for quite a while since they have a different pov on
this.

That piece of journalism is utter garbage. As some have said on this
thread - no-one forces anyone else to use GPL licensed software. If
you don't want to use it then fine, but stop whining about the terms
of the license if you do.
