This is of some concern to me as well. A number of our utilities /

performance. If this is significantly slower, it may cause some issues

prefer to do it in the different way than putting shared library
version in the LIB_DEPENDS is good to me either.

 Two points here:

Firstly LIB_DEPENDS is all about *building* packages. In that case, the
thing that matters is *API* compatibility, not ABI. Library APIs tend
to be much more stable than ABIs, meaning you can compile your code
against practically any version of a shared library. However, you won't
be able to run your compiled program against a shared library with a
different ABI. If the API does change incompatibly, then it is fine to
use constraints on the ABI version in a port, but doing this as a matter
of course is just being obstructive to people that may not want to
 upgrade dependency shlibs just yet.

Secondly, the ABI version of shared libraries has no effect on the
current dependency resolution mechanisms when installing packages
(either pkgng or the old pkg_tools). At the moment, the only thing that
is considered are package version numbers.

I know. Hences for the 'in future someone can add support'.

Cheers,
Mezz

This is an area where we have plans for dramatic changes with pkgng. We
want to import a general solver mechanism so that a package can have a
 list of generic requirements:

File /usr/local/bin/foo exists and is executable
  Shared library libfoo.so.3 is installed
Perl Module Foo::Bar 1.23 is available
Package foo-0.99 has option BLURFL enabled
  etc. etc.

Packages will similarly have a list of facilities they provide. The job
of the solver will be to find a set of packages such that there is a
provider for every requirement constrained by the user requirement that
their required package set is installed.

However, making this mechanism workable implies significant changes to
the ports -- introducing sub-packages in particular -- which are
basically incompatible with the existing pkg_tools. So we need to pkgng
1.0 in place to be able to proceed with further changes. Also a generic
solver is in itself a substantial piece of code to introduce. Which is
 why it hasn't happened yet.

 Cheers,

 Matthew

pkg is a new package manager for FreeBSD. It is designed as a replacement for
the pkg_* tools, and as a full featured binary package manager.

A couple of specific questions that I haven't seen answered during
this thread or in the wiki:
 - Can pkgng cope with parallel installs? What happpens if I
simultaneously (attempt to) install conflicting packages?

IMO, the parallel install shouldn't be supported for that exactly
reason. Not only that reason, it makes the dependencies get complicate
too.

 - If I use pkg delete -f, what happens to packages that depended
   on the forcibly-deleted package?
 - What happens if I delete a package where I've modified one of the
   files managed by the package?
 - What facilities does it have for auditing and repairing the package
database? (ie checking for inconsistencies between installed files
and the content of the package database)
 - How does it handle the situation where I install a package that
depends on foo version 1.2.3 but have foo version 1.2.4 (or 1.2.2)
installed? What about if I have bar version 1.3, which is ABI-
compatible with foo version 1.2.3, installed?

It's one of reason why I do not agree to remove the shared library
version from the LIB_DEPENDS, so that way in future someone can add
support in the package to check on shared library version then prevent
package to install because it's not ABI compatible. Unless someone

 - Will it detect that a package install would overwrite an existing
file? What does it do in this case?
 - I gather it handles update package more intelligently than
uninstall old package, install new package. Will it avoid
replacing an old file with an identical one in the new package?
If so, what happens to the file metadata (particularly uid, gid
   and mtime)?
 - Can it track user-edited configuration files that are associated
   with packages?
 - Can it do 2- or 3-way merges of package configuration files?
 - The README states Directory leftovers are automatically removed if
they are not in the MTREE. How does this work for directories
that are shared between multiple packages? Does this mean that if
I add a file to a directory that was created by a package, that
file will be deleted automatically if I delete the package?

 Nope.

You have a seriously wrong idea of maintainer. The community owns the
software, it's up to the community to decide how it should work.
Historically we have looked at the maintainer as the person who
volunteers to take care of code, not the person who has the exclusive
 lock on it.

and in the case of GNU sort and
GNU grep they are both unmaintained and replacements
 are welcome.

Actually both are maintained, it's just that we don't want to import the
new GNU versions. And yes, having BSD versions of these core tools is a
nice goal, but it's not one we should pursue for its own sake.

Please let's stop being an obstacle towards people
 bringing real progress to FreeBSD!

In the case of grep, there were a fairly large number of people who
agreed that a BSD grep with orders of magnitude worse performance than
the previous version was not something we, as a project, were willing to
stomach. Sufficiently such that the default was switched back.

So can we please stop pretending that it's me who's the problem, and
start looking at these things rationally?

Doug, I think you need to give it a chance. I do not see any problem
for anyone to switch the default and if the problems discover then
switch the default back. It's a bleeding edge branch where more people
can test it. The issue with grep was very harmeless and it was not
difficult to switch the default between GNU and BSD. It's not like
they threw GNU grep/sort away quickly.

How come that I haven't heard anything from you about the jemalloc
update? If you did then I must have missed it. It was very clearly
that it was not test and he doesn't handle it very well, but got fixed
evenly with the multi-commit. It was worst than grep/sort and other
projects.

If you are wondering why it's you. Because lately you are starting to
whine a lot without give the things chance. If we are doing your way
and nothing will moving on.

Alexander, Nvidia driver and libkse don't play together very well; it's
recommend to stick with libc_r if you want to use Nvidia driver.

The odd thing is that this seems to be system dependent, on my P4 system

I haven't done anything to debug or fix this because I need the failing

 - burncd getting stuck in acdcld for a long time while fixating

old
versions (~1.50) and the very latest ones (1.75 as I'm currently
running). 1.69 for instance did *not* show any such problems.

I will, however, update my kernel again now, to get the latest
sched_ule.c (if any changes have been made since 1.75) and to test
with
the new interrupt handler. I have a suspicion it might be a
combination
of SCHED_ULE and some signal/message/interrupt handling causing
messages
to get lost along the way. Because that's exactly how it feels...

Whee. Either the bump from sched_ule.c 1.75 to 1.77 changed something
back to the old status, or the new interrupt handling has had some major
influence.
All I can say is - wow. My system is now more responsive than ever, I
cannot (so far) reproduce any mouse jerkiness or bogus input or
anything, and things seem smoother.
As always I cannot guarantee that this report is not influenced by the
placebo effect, but I do feel that it's a very real improvement. The
fact that I can start VMWare, Firebird, Thunderbird, Gaim and gkrellm at
the same time without having *one* mouse hickup speaks for itself. I
couldn't even do that with ULE.
So Jeff or whoever did the interrupt stuff - what did you do?
This is wonderful news. I fixed a few bugs over the last couple of days.
I'm not sure which one caused your problem. I'm very pleased to hear
your
report though.
This SCHED_ULE (1.78) rocks!

I don't get any mouse lag anymore in the 'cd /usr/src ; make clean ; make
cleandir' and the beginner of 'portupgrade -ra'. I did the hard test; I
have Gnome2, Opera 7 (linux version), several gvim, several gnome-terminal
tabs, pan and even use totem to watch a movie (700mb) in full screen mode
;-).. While watching the movie and it doesn't get lag that much only while
unpack the large tarballs like mozilla. While the build and clean, it only
has very very little lag like one to two time(s) but the rest are pretty
smooth. The mouse doesn't get any lag at all.

Just let you know my experience with SCHED_ULE so far. In the command
line, I can tell that I can 'feel' it's faster but I don't know about the
real time (ie: benchmark).

It's better than SCHED_4BSD because I will get mouse lag if I do the same
thing as above with SCHED_4BSD.

BTW: I don't use KSE because of Nvidia driver.

Me too. Have had this problem since I got a Intellimouse PS/2

With any scheduler in 5-CURRENT and even more frequent in 4-STABLE,
IIRC. Using moused or not doesn't make a difference.
Get these messages on console: psmintr: out of sync, and the mouse

Can happen under load and sometimes when closing Mozilla (not often).
It could be related to the psm-driver. Or maybe I have a bad mouse, I
 don't know.
I will try another mouse, but it does work perfectly in Linux and

Strange, I cvsupped/rebuilt last night as well. I haven't been seeing
the
outright hangs on boot that people are talking about, but I am still
having
problems getting both of my ATAPI devices to attach properly.
Well, it doesn't hangs but I can surf around and fireup Gnome2 while I get

CPU/Memory in the ps/top, but just 90%-100% idle. I am pretty clueless on
this one, so I am stick to the old 5.1-CURRENT for now until someone know
what's wrong with my problem. I have four kernels under /boot, two of them
have debug enable and I am willing to do anything.

I got a response from Soren re: my last dmesg report; sounded like maybe

well, so I don't have more error messages.

I decided to reboot into singleuser and run fsck. I noticed, that the
buffers couldn't be flushed before restarting and the system couldn't
boot. It said: not ufs
I plugged the harddisk into another computer and tried to run fsck.
It couldn't find a superblock, used an alternative one and coredumped
while trying to repair the first error. Before dumping, it said
something like Couldnt allocate 39 bytes for inoinfo. I can
only remember the value of around 3.9G.
This happened on all filesystems of ad0. I could mount the
filesystem but not access it, but df said: Used: -2.8T (on a 40G disk).
I surrendered on that and ran newfs.
I don't know why, but fsck works on ad1.
fsck said something like softupdate inconsistency while trying to
repair the filesystem which obviously didn't completely work.
I have lost over 1,000 to 2,000 emails like three times when the Nvidia
driver crashed and had to do the power off and on to get it boot to let the
fsck background do the job. Yesterday, I CVSup'ed and did the buildworld to
update my -CURRENT. I got panic and reboot; first time I see the same
message above, 'softupdate inconsistency' and I had to ran fsck by manual.
After that, I discovered that my /var/, /compat/linux/ and very little
stuff in my home directory have been destroyed. I can't produce the panic
anymore so can't really give any help that much now; it was only panic at
once for unknown reason.

The mistake is in the way the Gnome System Monitor display the free
memory.

I just watched both 'top' and the System Monitor as I opened program
after
program until the system started swapping, and System monitor reports
almost 100M free while top reported less than 10M.

To _always_ have a little memory free is A Good Thing(tm). FreeBSD has
some pretty advanced memory management that will start swapping _before_
the system runs out of RAM. However, the System Monitor's display of
this is simply inaccurate. There was NOT 100M free when it started
swapping
on my system.
Well, the 5.0, old -CURRENT and 4.8 have never touch the swap, until 5.1-
CURRENT. My system has 256mb ram and it's always touch swap now. If I
compile some stuff, sometime it will get around 300mb swap. Current, I only
have Gnome 2.3.x and Opera running, so what my top looks like this:

Mem: 85M Active, 29M Inact, 51M Wired, 4496K Cache, 35M Buf, 73M Free
Swap: 512M Total, 79M Used, 433M Free, 15% Inuse
But, I will remove the Gnome System Monitor applet, then reboot and see how
it goes for the whole afternoon.

alright, `port compile issues raised with the adoption of gcc-3.3'
Patches to fix broken ports are welcome.
Looking at AbiWord2 I suspect this has to be pushed
upstream in some cases.
OK, here is a - ahem - patch for aspell:

// it at http://www.gnu.org/.
#include stdio.h
+#include g++/cassert
#include aspell.h
It works on my colleague's and my current and my stable.
But maybe it's not the right way (tm) (to 'do-it) :-)
But should I post that on -ports, -current or send it to the
ports maintainer ? I'd rather avoid tracking -ports...

But, this patch doesn't work/fix to me on yesterday -CURRENT. Here's what I
get error following:

I am not sure if it's NFS bug, I might missed option or it's just

Yes, this is a known problem: the tests run by daemontools seem to
hang forever due to some problems with locking files over NFS.
Ok, thanks.. Look forward for someone to fix this issue and I am willing to

I guess I should add a WITHOUT_TESTS knob to disable the test run.
That's good idea and add the comment to explain about known issue of NFS

jeff2003/06/16 23:39:51 PDT

FreeBSD src repository

Modified files:
sys/kern sched_ule.c
Log:
- Add a new function sched_interact_update() that scales back the sleep
and run time.
- Scale the sleep and run time back via sched_interact_update() in more
places. This is to keep the statistic more accurate.
- Charge a parent one tick for forking a child.
- Add only the run time and not the sleep time to the parents kg when a
thread exits. This allows us to give a penalty for having an expensive
thread exit but does not give a bonus for having an interactive thread
exit.
- Change the SLP_RUN_THROTTLE to limit us to 4/5th and not 1/2.
- Change the SLP_RUN_MAX to two seconds. This keeps bursty interactive
applications like mozilla and openoffice in the interactive range even
through expensive tasks.
- Recalculate the slice after every sleep. This ensures that once a task
has been marked interactive it only has a slice of 1 at the risk of
giving tasks that sleep for a very brief period a longer time slice.

I think Terry is jumping to conclusions on what Evan's problem could be.
I have this seen this cause application to crash at exit (if using
OpenGL) but never a crash in kernel-space from the nVidia drivers.

Any hint?
Broken sed(1), I think. Has been fixed last week.
Yes, I remember it's fixed but I didn't remember/know that broke sed caused
this..

If you did a -DNOCLEAN build, don't. Otherwise, build and install sed
first.
Build and install sed first did the trick. Thanks!

You didn't check in the right NOTES then. 5-CURRENT has different NOTES
files, one general, machine independent and several smaller others for
each platform. The machine independent is in /usr/src/sys/conf, the
others are in /usr/src/sys/ARCH/conf.

Right, there was on mapping found.

I don't understand, so how do you explain about ldd? If I change the main

Nevermind, I think you are right it does work. Because, I did the test on

'ldd -a' is usefule for finding this out.

I am trying to get ggv link against libc_r instead libthr, but it doesn't
work as expect.. Maybe, I must have done something wrong?

# cat /etc/libmap.conf

I even rebuilt rtld-elf (WITH_LIBMAP=yes in /etc/make.conf) and ggv then
reinstall them, but no luck. The ggv is still linking to libthr instead
libc_r.. Also, ggv isn't only one app that I tried. I did tried with gst-
register and no luck to change the link to libc_r.

Make sure that you have rev 1.6 of src/libexec/rtld-elf/libmap.c. It
fixes a bug in the libmap.conf parsing code.
I downgrade from 1.7 - 1.6 and the problem is still there. I CVSup'ed
