What I do know about virtual machines is that they don't share kernel
resources too well. If both virtual machines are trying to access the
kernel, there will be a problem.

No go on this one. I received the same errors. Rebuilding the entire
system isn't an option that I currently have. Qt4 and anything
dependent upon it will just have to wait.

Tinderbox doesn't build in the examples given as a normal user would.
Buildworld should be ran from /usr/src and doesn't need the
"/usr/bin/make -b" command.
Where is the buildkernel output?
