For years I have put 'device atapicam' in my kernel.  If my memory
serves my well, this was to assist with dvd recording.  I must have
missed something.  Is it now as simple as adding hw.ata.atapi_dma="1"
to /boot/loader.conf?

atapicam is no longer needed after migration to CAM-based ATA stack. hw.ata.atapi_dma="1" is also default value starting from about 2004.


Ah, yes- about my second year of FreeBSD. All I recall is that 5.0 was released very shortly after my first install.

That is probably result of building atapicam together with option ATA_CAM, that is at least useless combination.
