Maybe this is misleading... But: I have an old HP Vectra XU with SCSI
disks showing exactly the same behaviour. With SMP enabled it hangs
under heavy disk activity, with single processor it works just fine.
(Recent -STABLE of course, but it has been like this since 4.0.)

Maybe this is not related to ATA at all? Is this an SMP issue (again)?
