panic in kernel configuration menu

When the kernel configuration menu comes up with the three possible
selections, pressing ctrl-alt-del ends up with this message:

panic: spin lock (null) held by 0x0 for  5 seconds

sounds like one that should be an easy fix

Don't count on it.  At the moment, it probably fits into the category
"well don't do that then".
