Actually, the OS-independent code for extended attributes has already been implemented in libarchive, thanks to Jaako Heinonen, who also wrote the Linux-specific portions for archive_extract (restore to disk) and tar/write.c (read from disk). All that's needed is for someone to write the FreeBSD-specific portions. I'd be happy to give pointers to anyone who has the time to finish this.
