Well, I never like to do anything as root which I don't need root
permissions to do.
If you have a "compiling" engine, and a "test" machine, this may be
reasonable.

I found the question/answer kernel configuration maddening
on Linux.
Linux has a tk based script (xconfig) which is pretty good...
