This sounds as if you are missing the Makefile. Do you have a Makefile in /usr/src? If not, this is your problem.
The Makefile should be installed by the "base" package within the "src" distribution. To install this, you need to be root, then: /stand/sysinstall Go to Configure->Distributions->src Make sure to install the "base" package. When doing anything with sources you will need this, as well as the distribution that contains the appropriate sources.
