This may be going too far off the Samba track but have you considered
using WebDAV? All versions of MS connect to this and it's easier to
set-up security by sharing through SSL connection. Apache can
authenticate against any NIS, database or even username password using
htpasswd.

You also may want to run nmap against your localhost to see that port
80 is serving. Also start a tcpdump session to get a handle on how
packets are flowing for your port 80, 8080 requests.

Check out the freebsd handbook chapter 5. It has a lot of good tips.
To get a gui login add the line gdm_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf.
