Try this patch:
https://cgit.delphij.net/freebsd/patch/?id=39c6ec81eb015ed6788c203a1aea6148f813d063
We haven't merged it to -HEAD only because it's not clear how much
overhead this would incur.

Panics can hardly be considered normal... I was unable to reproduce the
issue though, is it possible for you to get a backtrace and tell us what
release are you using?

a
kernel.debug which contains debugging symbols, which is quite useful
if you get a kernel panic and want to report it back. On the other
hand, debugging symbols would be stripped before you install a new
kernel so it does not affect the running kernel.

The diff is against the sources from -CURRENT where it applies and
compiles cleanly. You should be ok using the current vidcontrol sources
on -STABLE. The only difference is just some code purity fixes by Xin Li
- probably in preparation for integrating
all the steps above without any errors at all.
Is there anything I could be doing wrong?
Are you absolutely sure that you are sync'ing with 4-STABLE (now
4.11-STABLE), which is identified by RELENG_4? If you are sync'ing
with RELENG_4_10, that's the 4.10-RELEASE security branch.
