I don't know what the problem in your case is, but just a few thoughts:
- make sure your linux box isn't providing NFSv4, as FreeBSD does only
support for v2 and 3,
- to test and whether the nfs server is receiving you use showmount -e
lg, it's quicker
- yes, you need a portmapper running

I am trying to access an NFS server (Debian Linux,
host name lg) from my FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE system
(host name gw) on my LAN.
My basic system info:
gw# uname -mnprs
FreeBSD gw 4.10-STABLE i386 i386
It doesn't seem to work:
gw# mount -v -t nfs lg:/mnt/tt/music /root/uu
