I hope that someone can help me with this:
I'm trying to get a HP StorageWorks DAT 72i drive running
in a Compaq ML370 (Rev. P17, i. e. the 1st generation).
The tape drive is properly connected to the machine,
at least I am assuming this since the Smart Array Controller
is detecting it

Did you define it in the fstab?
check as root by typing: vi (or another editor) /etc/fstab
