I use 'mtv' for mpegs and 'xanim' for AVI files. They both work great.

The smpeg-xmms works well for mpegs. For avis, check out avifile.
Both are in /usr/ports/graphics.

I have only successfull experiences with mplayer and gmplayer. I also
use plugger as the mozilla plugin.
