This is becoming a FAQ. 5.0-RELEASE was never designed as a supported release. See the early adopter's guide again: http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html Then see if your problem is fixed by trying -current. No one wants to spend time figuring out problems that are already fixed. (as yours may have been.) So check out: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/current-stable.html and follow the advice there. Anyone else interested in having a quick FAQ written up for this that we can reference? I'll write it if anyone cares to mark it up.
