"Safely" removing USB hard drive

I have a USB keychain storage device. I can get it working fine but I cant figure out how to properly disconnect it. In windows I can detach the drive and the LED on the USB keychain goes off. Can this be accomplished in FBSD 5.1? Or is unmounting and simply removing it safe?
