you had installed slice/part by sysinstall, so
1- by default b partitions are dedicated to swap part.
2- you haven't a swap partition in ad0s1
3- /var/run/dmesg.boot won't show you any

Is /dev/ad0 there? /dev/ad0s1b ?
Do you have SCSI disks instead? A RAID?

I had this same type problem. It appears that FreeBSD and the BIOS did
not select the proper geometry for the disk. I tried a different disk
on the same system, and I was able to install.
Knopptix reported a different geometry than FreeBSD, so I tried setting
the geometry to match what

machine
with 80GB hard disk I get the following error:
Unable to find device node for /dev/ad0s1b in
/dev!
The creation of filesystems will be aborted
