fouled up cvsup

I thought I understood cvsup till I did it.. After running cvsup all my ports collection was deleted... accept ports I had already installed. I wanted to avoid installing ANY ports untill I had cvsuped the collection. How can I leave ports not yet installed, alone in the collection? advice
