I'd use ImageMagick (graphics/ImageMagick) Let's assume you have the student's jpg files in directory pics, and a sh-esque shell: $ cd pics $ for i in *.jpg;do convert -antialias -scale 80x80 $i `echo $i|sed -e 's/jpg/scaled.jpg'`;done Have a go at the man page of convert, and maybe play a bit with it as there are other interesting parameters.
