the following howto comes from a post on bsdforums.org. I used it and it
worked well.
#cd /usr/ports/multimedia/mplayer
#make WITHOUT_RUNTIME_CPUDETECTION=yes WITH_GUI=yes WITH_FREETYPE=yes
