seems the way to to this is pkg_add -r software-name
system update:
still not sure? tho this is probly something really simple, seems more the
one way to do it.

Been reading the FreeBSD handbook,
I installed portsnap:
ran:
portsnap fetch & extract & update
then installed portmanager and ran portmanager -u
its now updating.
