I'm just curious,
We tried a few experiments with GCC 3.2 and parts of our source
code and found performance improvements. We want to see if there
are any similar improvements to the FreeBSD OS if we use GCC 3.2.
I understand that it is not a simple task to just swap compilers
to build the kernel. Would be very int

Hello list,
Something strange just occured on a quite busy server running FreeBSD 4.6-RC
as of May 28. First, it seemed to have suddenly rebooted, but not by a
kernel trap or anything like it, the machine has been up for over 120 days,
running smoothly. We checked the logs, seeing that it

I noticed the following each night when syslog is running:
(they are logged to the console)
Oct 15 19:14:16 newsyslog[258]: logfile turned over
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/cron: No such file or directory
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/maillog: No such file or directory
I'm a FreeBSD newbie who have attempted the installation of 4.5 a year
ago when I received problems with my NetGear FA311 (National
Semiconductor). I was told then that installing from floppies does not
offer me the same set of drivers and thus I should use a CD instead. I
got a CD writer this
#ll /sbin/reboot
-r-xr-xr-x 4 root wheel 227388 Sep 19 02:11 /sbin/reboot
uname -sr
FreeBSD 4.7-RC

Subject: strange reboot, permission
I am having a problem with the setup in the subject upon exiting X to go
back to the console. When I exit, I end up with a garbled FAST rolling
screen. The only way out is a reboot, that I have been able to discover
thus far anyway. I thought I saw something about this somewhere, but my

Attack?
Install some rootkit and reboot, perhaps?

I would like to try and install FreeBSD 2.11 on a i386 with 4MB RAM.
FreeBSD 2.11 is available from ftp://moe.2bsd.com/pub/2.11BSD.
Unfortunatly, there are several hundred small files in this directory. At
present I am using Netscape and shift_clicking on each name is slow and
painful :-) .

I have discovered one other thing. If I use vidcontrol VESA_800x600 for
the console, the garbled screen does not happen when I exit X. This
would be great if I could figure out how to get the vidcontrol VESA to
support a resolution of 1024x768. Anyone got any pointers on this?
Thanks!

Hi all. Noob question. Didn't see the OpenSSH 3.5 in the ports when I
checked earlier and yet Slashdot says it's out. Anyone know if it is
yet and if not, when it will be?
Also, is this a recommended upgrade or a required one? Aka you need it
to fix a big, big issue or something.
Thanks!!
