XFree86 locks up on exit on ThinkPad T21

I run FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE on my 256M ThinkPad T21, and have installed XFree86-4.3.0,1 from packages, along with the Gnome desktop, package gnome2-2.2.0. My laptop locks up upon termination of the X session. When I select Log Out from the Actions menu, the screen goes to a completely blank
