As Michael said, I would go with 5.3-RC1 since 5.3 is expected to be stable in a few days and it uses Xorg which is where future efforts are going to be put forth. I used to use Fluxbox for a desktop but have recently switched to XFCE4. It seems to take up less space and is very easy to work with.
