I want it to do the same thing that 'portupgrade -R whateverport' does

What happens if you run as root

?
What version of portmanager are you using?

In fact (replying to my own message :p)

It's going to be interesting when microsoft's silverlight comes out, it
is supposed to be superior to flash, if it becomes popular even the
linux community will have problems because I really doubt that they will
release a plugin for other OSes other than Mac OS any way.

I think perhaps the Linux users who say those things are just trying to get
people to use Linux, for political reasons and not because Linux is
necessarily better.

I'm trying to find out what they are looking at in netcraft that can
possibly prove their point.

and because it doesn't destabilize the browser like it once used to.

So what's the deal with Flash? Occasionally, I will get a link on
YouTube/Google Video that looks interesting, but for the most part,
I've ignored them. Over the years, I have occasionally tried the
mozilla flash plugin, but that has always crashed my browser within
the first 10 minutes of use.

So for those of you using FreeBSD 7, what is the current state of
Flash? Can it be used regularly? Is it ready for the BSD desktop?
 Caveats? Comments? Advice?

So far I haven't had any major problems with linux-flash7 on my native firefox
using nspluginwrapper. Sometimes I get the sound off sync but I can survive.
It's the 9 that crashes and in my opinion should be removed from the ports
collection. You can always try graphics/gnash which works natively with
firefox.

 Hello all

This week I have time to trace the problem with evolution that
lasts too much time to start.

The problem is that glib on function g_module_load, searchs for a symbol
 g_module_check_init, g_module_unload... by default.

It occurs that the evolution code, that will be loaded, does not have
those functions available... so th glib (and dlsym) tries to find the
symbol in every load module in memory... and doing so consumes all cpu
for several seconds, for each load module

! coded a solution for gmodule that tests for those special symbos, and
if found, uses dlsymb(RTLD_NEXT,) instead of dlsym(handler)
so it will search a much less modules, and evolution will start in 3
 seconds... (20 times less...)

Of course the correct strategy is to correct code evolution module
 (libevolution-mail.so). will do next time

 modified file: /usr/ports/devel/glib20/files/patch-gmodule::gmodule-dl.c

please note this is only a temporary fix... the correct solution is to
 fix the

I stopped using gnome because of evolution and few other admin apps that don't
work, it took about 80 seconds to open evolution so I got fed up with it and
changed to xfce4, personally I think there's quite a few things broken with
gnome, specially the admin part of it which is not a problem with KDE. Posted
the problem a few times and all I've got was the freebsd loader spent quit a
bit of time looking for every evolution plugin so I disabled them and it still
took about 50 seconds to open which was unacceptable to me. Ubuntu on a slower
machine only takes about 3 seconds with every plugin enabled so it was obvious
to me that there was a bug somewhere. I hope they apply your fix to the gnome
port.

I think you would have to edit the grub file inside /boot directory.

I don't know if this helps, but deb packages are really ar achives.

I found it, it's called dpkg, thanks anyway.

Yes you did! Interesting enough thought, I would like to see how one
might config apt-get to be used w/FreeBSD and the packages (I assume?).

I don't see how apt-get could work though! It pull every binary
dependency built for debian.

Compiling new kernel fails on 7.0RC3

2008-02-24 Thread E. J. Cerejo
After having a few problems with Fbsd 6.3 stable I decided to try 7.0
which impressed me right away because I noticed right away that it
performed better on my computer. Now I decided to build my own custom

I get this error after it runs for about 15 minutes:

  device uhid# Human Interface Devices
  device ukbd# Keyboard
  device ulpt# Printer
device umass # Disks/Mass storage - Requires scbus and da

Well, do you have 'device scbus' and 'device da' in your kernel config?
If not, I suggest you add them back.

You were right! I deleted them by mistake!
I just edited the kernel file and added them in, now do I have to clean any
directory or just run the buildkernel KERNCONF=mykernel again?

I downloaded it just fine from the Makefile. It seems to extract itself
entirely reasonably, though the name definitely looks peculiar. Visiting
their website, it seems to randomly come and go whether I can access the
download page. Try cding into the port directory and typing make a few
times a few minutes apart.

http://store.itsyourftp.com/~sonic2000gr/freebsd/compiz-fusion/article.html

Your feedback is welcome.
Manolis, this seems to be a very nice work! I'm interested in
committing it into the FreeBSD doc repository if you can send me the
sources.

Thanks for your great work.

Cheers,

Sure will do :)
Let me just have a final look and maybe correct a few minor things, and
I will email you the sources later today.

Thanks!
Manolis

I'm glad I asked the question! By the way ccsm works also within gnome,
so you can use both gconf and ccsm under gnome.

Yes, I use it all the time.

Why has the ports tree be up to date?

What conceivable reason would you have for using an outdated ports
tree?

Will portmanager download anything from the cvsup repos?

It will only fetch programs that need updating, just like portupgrade.

Would you be so kind as to explain your reluctance to update your
system? The number of potential programs that need updating seems
rather immaterial when compared to the potential system wide
improvement in its overall performance. You could simply start the
upgrade in the evening when you are through using the PC. Depending on
the speed of your machine, it might very well be done by the next
morning, if not sooner.

My system was updated yesterday and I'm trying to resolve the issues
that arose from the updating. I can't update my system everyday I
just don't have time for it.

If you don't want to rebuild the stuff, just add

libicui18n.so.36libicui18n.so

to your /etc/libmap.conf file. This solution works if no functions
have been removed from the library interface, which only very rarely
happens.

I just ran pkg_libchk -m piped to a file but looks pretty confusing,
is there a way to get only the output for the lines containing
/usr/local/lib/libicui18n.so.38?

I can reccomend you the -q option, which will give you a very clean
output simply listing all the packages that have problems.
Without the -q option the program shows its status, which is not well
readable in a file, because it doesn't use \n but \r.

That you get output with the -m/--mean flag, but not without means that
the false positive detection is erroneous. For the time being I'd
recommend you to use the libmap.conf solution.
Later this day I will add some debugging functionality to the script and
send that version to you, if you are willing to spend your time helping
me finding this problem.

Well I'm glad to say that the output problem was just a minor problem,
the cat and grep worked fine when sending the output to the terminal and
I just copied it and pasted it into gedit. And indeed pkg_libchk is by
far the best solution, if I was to update every package that depended on
icu I would have to update 239 packages which discouraged me right away,
by running pkg_libchk the amount of packages to be updated was reduced
to 71, wrote a quick script and left it running overnight and those
packages got updated and by god I don't have any more problems with
libicui18n.so.38. Nice little tool.

One more question. I see that there is no man page for pkg_libchk, how
do I find out more about its options and switches? What command or
commands does it rely upon?

portmanager -s only lists what needs to be done, it doesn't change

which are current but have been built with out of date dependencies,

Nope. Symlinking shlibs of different ABI versions together is the
wrong answer. There's a reason the ABI version number was bumped,
and it indicates the new shlib is not compatible with the old one.

 Formally, the correct fix is:

# portupgrade -rf icu-\*

or the equivalent in whatever ports management software you prefer.

However this is pretty unfortunate as icu is a basic component that
a large number of packages depend upon. Expect to spend a long time
 compiling.

Oh, and it's a good idea to update as the latest icu fixes some
 security problems. See

The port sysutils/bsdadminscripts installs a script called pkg_libchk that

depending on icu-\* do so indirectly by linking to a library that links to

  2. Every now and then I see messages fly by in which you can find
 exactly which flags/options to use.
  3. You are right, there should be documentation...

P.S. I found this stashed in a folder meant for future reference:
Assuming you have already setup you X server for composite, to run

  compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-dekstop-hints ccp

  Your feedback is welcome.

  Manolis

I have it working now but there are two issues that I seem not to be
able to solve. First compiz will start when x starts but emerald
won't start and I get no window borders and can't move them. Solution
is to open the terminal window and run emerald --replace . Second
issue is with compiz, I open ccsm to configure my 3d effects but they
won't get saved, it will let me select them or unselect them but once
I close ccsm and run it again every change is gone and the defaults
are back. Any Ideas? Do the users have to be members of a special
  group?

I run compiz by hand, I don't need it on all the time. I will
investigate these and get back to you.

I found what the problem was under KDE, in your tutorial you tell us to
run these commands as a regular user:

  compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
  emerald --replace

I found that both of these commands need a sign at the end of each of
these commands, which will look like this:

  compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
  emerald --replace

once you run them like this, KDE will stop acting weird and starts
functioning correctly. Now when you restart kde it no longer starts
compiz automatically and you will get all the window borders and you are
able to save the settings using ccsm.

Which is not the case when running gnome. Once you run these commands,
compiz will work normally just like in KDE but it won't let you save any
settings, another words if you run ccsm it won't let you select or
unselect any plugins. Compiz command might be a little different for
  gnome.
Gnome will also complain if you run these commands without
installing /usr/ports/x11-themes/ubuntulooks first, once you install this
it will stop complainning. I will try to find out why I can't use ccsm
and if I find out I will let you know.

I don't know about KDE, but I am using compiz-fusion (manually) in gnome
 without having installed ubuntulooks.
Thanks for your investigation and feedback. If you come up with a
complete set of settings, I will update the article.

The only way to fix gnome and get the settings to save was to delete the user
and recreate it again. I found out what causes compiz to act weird like this
is when you try to run compiz with different options than the ones you gave
me. If that happens than you have to recreate the user account. Deleting
the .config directory is not enough, don't know why.

Do not forget to update your article by adding the at the end of the
compiz and emerald commands. If they get run without sign at the end,
compiz will start acting weird on you.

Thanks for your help, it's working very well now.

2008-02-06 Thread E. J. Cerejo
Does anyone know what might be causing evolution to crawl (more than a
minute to open up)? It's been a while since I used it but when I did it
wasn't this slow to open up. I don't see any error messages, so I can't
post any of them. I have a feeling that it's looking for something
before it comes up on the screen.

I found what the problem was under KDE, in your tutorial you tell us to run
these commands as a regular user:

compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
emerald --replace

I found that both of these commands need a sign at the end of each of these
commands, which will look like this:

compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
emerald --replace

once you run them like this, KDE will stop acting weird and starts functioning
correctly. Now when you restart kde it no longer starts compiz automatically
and you will get all the window borders and you are able to save the settings
using ccsm.

Which is not the case when running gnome. Once you run these commands, compiz
will work normally just like in KDE but it won't let you save any settings,
another words if you run ccsm it won't let you select or unselect any
plugins. Compiz command might be a little different for gnome.
Gnome will also complain if you run these commands without
installing /usr/ports/x11-themes/ubuntulooks first, once you install this it
will stop complainning. I will try to find out why I can't use ccsm and if I
find out I will let you know.

It may be that you got the slices no longer marked as bootable.
Try using fdisk(8) or boot0cfg(8) to re-enable booting on those slices.

I would do it from the fixit.

Well that didn't work but I finally fixed it.

from the moutroot I was able to go into single user mode by running
these commands:

ufs:/dev/ad0s2a
fsck -p /
mount /

after this I was able to check and fix my /etc/fstab file, for some
reason the mount points got all changed to slice 4, e.g. ad0s4a, changed
them back to ad0s2a and so on, after that I was able to boot just fine.
How it happened I have no idea.

I have never had this problem compiling xmcd. Or if someone could tell
me where I can download the latest xmcd package, I found a few but they
are old versions of xmcd and it won't install. Another alternative
would be another cd player similar to xmcd the ones I've tried are very
basic with no cddb access. Thanks.

Please use this patch for patches:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/112876

and xmcd will compile. Please note the little correction below, or new
file 'patch-aj' will appear in xmcd's port dir and not in files/.

(BTW, you should always include an actual command that triggered
error(s), not just error itself.)

You didn't say what players you tried, but there are really many
cd-players; maybe some of them are basic but there are a lot
advanced ones. XMMS could be a good advanced lightweight choice with
a lot of plugins; if you want something glimmering and huge, try amaroK.

Hello Nikola,

First of all thanks for you help but I'm still a little confused about
where to put that file, I put it in the ..audio/xmcd/files/ directory
and named it patch-aj but when I try to install it asks me # File to
patch: and I don't know what to put! Did I miss something?

Thanks again

The same happens when I do that. Here's what I have inside the files

The error you've quoted is nothing more than a warning. It almost
certainly has always been in your Xorg.%d.log. It is normally one of the
last messages printed out, but its completely irrelevant to your
problem.

Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (presuming your display is :0) to
the list.

I don't see anything revelant in that file though:

xorg broken after using portupgrade

2007-03-29 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I'm running FBSD release 6.2 and after updating my ports with portupgrade I can
start xorg. I'm getting this error message:

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Has anyone any idea what might be the problem?

I deleted xorg and everything connected with it and compiled it anew and the
same error happens.

Thanks in advance

FREEBSD 6.1 RELEASE

I just bought a wireless pci card, CNet CWP-854, and according to the

ral

man page this card is supported. I compiled a new kernel with 'device

wlan' and 'device ral' as per the ral man page, it compile without any
errors, but I can't get it to work.

If I run: 'ifconfig ral0 inet 192.168.1.42 netmask 0xff00 ssid
04Z412560727'
I get this: 'ifconfig: interface ral0 does not exist'
I run this: 'kldload if_ral'
I get this: 'kldload: can't load if_ral: File exists'

Hi,

I'm using an identical card under 6.0-stable without any problems.

Within my kernel I have:

device wlan
device an
device awi
device ral
device wi

It might be a silly question - but have you installed the new kernel?

If you have compiled and installed the kernel with support for the
device
you shouldn't need to load any modules for it.

My kldstat shows:

Id Refs AddressSize Name
1 13 0xc040 55e1d8 kernel
21 0xc095f000 91f0 bridge.ko
31 0xc0969000 2d90 wlan_wep.ko
41 0xc096c000 41c4 wlan_tkip.ko
51 0xc0971000 6fe4 wlan_ccmp.ko
61 0xc0978000 1bac wlan_xauth.ko
71 0xc097a000 2ef4 wlan_acl.ko
81 0xc2655000 b000 ntfs.ko

Although I've never got it working properly with wpa/tkip and have
recently
replaced it with a linksys wrt54g. Worked fine for ages with
unencrypted/wep.

I run this: 'pciconf -lv'
I get this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:2:0: class=0x028000 card=0x25611814

chip=0x03011814

rev=0x00 hdr=0x00
  vendor   = 'Ralink Technology, Corp'

I get:

Can't connect to my wireless network

2006-10-29 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I'm running FreeBSD 6.1 Release and after installing a CNet CWP-854 pci
wireless nic and running into some problems with the ral driver I was able to
fix that but now I can't connect to my wireless network.

If I run these commands one at a time:

# ifconfig ral0 inet 192.168.1.42 netmask 0xff00 ssid My-Network
or
# ifconfig ral0 inet DHCP ssid My-Network

Nothing happens and if I check it with:

# ifconfig ral0

I get this:

ral0: flags=8803UP,BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST mtu 1500
inet6 fe80::ff:fe00:700%ral0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
ether 02:00:00:00:07:00
media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect
status: no carrier
ssid My-Network channel 1
authmode OPEN privacy OFF txpowmax 100 protmode CTS

status says no carrier I also notice channel 1 when I'm using channel 6 but I
even tried to add the channel to the ifconfig command and still didn't work.
Also where is says ether, I'm assuming this is the MAC address, is not the
right mac address for my wireless card, it should be 00-08-A1-A4-E0-EC. Right
now I'm running a complete open network just to test this which later on I will
use the Access list feature in my router which should not effect it.

   vendor   = 'Ralink Technology, Corp'

I run this: 'dmesg | grep ral0'
I get this: nothing, zip, not a thing.

Sometimes, when I exit fluxbox I see this on the screen: 'Module pci/ral failed
to register: 17'

I'm totally confused, does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

PCI Wireless Card?

2006-10-22 Thread E. J. Cerejo
Hello,

I'm looking to buy a PCI Wireless Card for my computer, I'm running FBSD 6.1
release, from what I understand there are only two drivers ath and wi. The
list is very limited on the man page for ath. I'm looking to spend up to
$30.00 on this card. Are there any other choices than those shown?

Thank you.

Did you happen to check /usr/bin/ to see if lp, lpq, lpr, and lprm are there?
If they are, you need to either remove them or rename them. Cups installs
these in /usr/local/bin and since it's later in the path, they're never used.

I just did what you told me but I still get the same message when run lpstat,

Re: CUPS, one more try

2006-07-13 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I had just fixed it!

It looks like it's printing fine now, the only thing I had not done was to
uninstall everything that had to do with printing, so I uninstalled apsfilter,
CUPS, LPRng and hplip then reinstalled cups and hplip only and it worked. It
looks like LPRng and apsfilter conflicts with cups or I think it overwrites bin
files like lp, lpr etc, I know that LPRng puts lp, lpr on the same directory as
cups, pretty sure that caused the problem.

Take a look at:
 http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/cups.html
Go to the section on FreeBSD and NetBSD, this should help you out.

There are a number of suggestions here that I didn't give, sorry, I wanted to
give you some help, not hand it to you on a platter.

Do a 'ps ax |grep cup' and make sure that you see 'cupsd'. If you don't, you
will need to do a 'cupsd', recheck that you have cupsd running.

Go to http://localhost:631/admin (user would probably be root and password
would be the root password. Configure printers from there.

With CUPS yes and I can print a test page just like I mentioned above but
apsfilter doesn't have those drivers in there or at the very least I could not
find them. It may work with other drivers but so far it hasn't worked with
drivers that I tried out of apsfilter.

when you updated it to 1.2.0 it stopped working. A lot of people are having
issues with CUPS at 1.2.0. I recommend going to the mailing list archives and
going through the several CUPS threads to see if anything there may help you,
if you haven't already. One thread entitled HP Officejet Printer may assist

CUPS Woes Woes

and go back to printer administration and the printer I just configured is not

amsn and X_OpenFont

2006-05-14 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I'm running FreeBSD 6.1 release and everytime I run amsn and try to login it
crashes. The program comes up asking me to login and as soon as I try to login
it crashes. I get this about X_OpenFont.

 amsn

Current stack: :!DOCTYPE

  Value in failed request: 0x1200020
Serial number of failed request: 3903
Current serial number in output stream: 3904

does anyone have any idea as to why this happens?

Kind of like this:

in your xorg.conf:
- --
# **
# Screen sections.
# **

Section Screen
Identifier TV
Device Geforce
Monitor TV
Option TVStandardPAL-B
Option ConnectedMonitor TV
DefaultDepth24
SubSection Display
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes 800x600
EndSubSection
EndSection

# **
# ServerLayout sections.
# **

## The first layout is used by default, to select a different one, use
## 'startx -- -layout name'

Section ServerLayout
Identifier TV
Screen TV
InputDevice Mouse0 CorePointer
InputDevice Keyboard0 CoreKeyboard
EndSection

-

simply add the TV ServerLayout and startx with the --layout parameter
replace the device with your driver of course

Help with Apsfilter and HP 842c

2005-10-29 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I'm running FreeBSD 5.4 and my printer used to print
perfectly until I did a fresh install because had to
change hard drives, now I can't get my printer to
print using apsfilter. Everytime I print the printer
starts feeding the paper and to print and then it just
hangs and sometimes it turns off. I've checked the
error logs and all it tells me is this:

Oct 29 11:41:58 ecerejo hpijs: unable to write to
output, fd=6, count=4096: m

Your help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Apsfilter problem

2005-10-10 Thread E. J. Cerejo
Since my FBSD5.4 reinstallation I can't get my HP
Deskjet 842c to print. I didn't have any problems
with it before I configured it exactly the way it was
before and now I start printing it starts feeding the
first sheet and when it starts printing the first line
it just shuts down my printer. Does anyone know how
to fix this?

I'm running the latest version of apsfilter.

Apsfilter FBSD 5.4

2005-10-05 Thread E. J. Cerejo
I could print perfectly using apsfilter before I did a
clean FreeBSD instalation and now something is not
right, when I go through the setup program and I
finally test a page the sheet of paper gets fed and
looks like it starts printing and then everything
freezes on my printer or it completely shuts down and
it only turn on if I pull the plug. I'm using
FBSD5.4. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Re: Nothing works

2005-07-05 Thread E. J. Cerejo
First you should stop with this kind of sarcasm, I
knew very little about FreeBSD when I first started
and today I have no problems configuring it the way I
want it yet yo claim to be familiar with unix and you
are having such a nightmare! Something is wrong! You
need to do some reading, not because it's FreeBSD but
because it's freaking unix, anyone would have to do
the same with linux or any other unix flavor.

You bought the wrong book, that book is not for you,
you should of gone with The Complete FreeBSD (the
latest one) or FreeBSD: An Open-Source Operating
System for Your Personal Computer if it has been
updated to 5x.

I'm assuming you were able to install freebsd since
you've tried to install some ports and couldn't, so
the reason it couldn't it's because you're not
connected to the internet, when you run make it tries
to download the source code automatically and because
it can't it fails, no code no candy! Install from
packages instead, you should have most of them on CD.

--- Timothy McLouth [EMAIL PROTECTED] escreveu:

First i tried to make my own installation cd(s) from
the instructions given, they did not work so I
e-mailed for answers got two different answers
neither of which worked so i bought the installation
cd(s) ver 5.4...I downloaded the manual which is of
little or no use due to variations in installation
methods described in the manual and what is actually
shown on screen...the ports collection came with
it...when i use the make install command it tries to
access the internet..then i get a message saying, it
couldnt fetch,... try manually... error 1...what is
the problem i would really like to use this
operating system...I also bought a book for $47
which is useless, the title is misleading...The
design and implementation of FreeBSD is of no use
unless you want to know what the processor is doing
from start to endwhat a waste of money..I am
familiar with unix and still have my unix book from
college, in addition i have a bachelors of science
 in computer information
systems...Im begining to believe that this is all
BS unless i get some straight answers...
