Starting X with xf86-video-vesa

In my third attempt to get any form of a working X server I tried the xf86-video-vesa driver. (x11/nvidia-driver fails, x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv fails) I get the following error message: failed to set mtrr: Invalid argument In Xorg.log I have the following line at the end (==) VESA(0): Write

X panics on xorg 7.4

I just upgraded X and when I started X with a fresh config. When X starts I see the normal no-wm-yet screen with an unmovable mouse. When I press ctrl+alt+spc I hear 3 beeps followed by a black screen. I tried x11/nvidia-driver and x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv. What should I be trying to fix it?
