Hi there,

I wouldn't think so 'cos FreeSBIE is based on FreeBSD 6.X.

If you want 5.3 or 5.4 then why not just do a normal installation ??

Gavin

FreeSBIE is based on FreeBSD 5.3. Their last release was on December 6,
2004 (5.3 came out in November), so it can't be 6.X.

 From their FAQ:

---
Is there a way to install FreeSBIE on my HD ?

Yes ! Since FreeSBIE 1.1 it's possible to use the BSDInstaller to
install FreeSBIE on your hard drive, and then turn it into FreeBSD
5.3-STABLE by means of cvsup

---

But I would do what Gavin said and do a real install of 5.4. It's really
not hard. :)

Huge apologies for giving you the wrong info there Mark, I was thinking
of another live distro.

FreeSBIE is pretty cool though.

I looked at that FAQ now and it says you can upgrade to 5.3 by using ports.

Do you know how the ports collection works?

I think the ports is the best way of managed packaged and programs that
I have ever seen.

Maybe you can do as you were wanting to.

Once again, sorry for the mis-information.

Gavin

Re: Unable to install 5.4 from CDROM

2005-09-16 Thread Gavin McDougall

Mark Jones wrote:

I'm having an odd problem installing 5.4 release from CDROM.

The machine is an HP ProLiant DL145. It didn't come with a CDROM drive, I
borrowed one from a Dell PowerEdge SC1425.
The CDs are good, I've installed on other machines with them - in fact, on
the same machine that I borrowed the CDROM from.

I can boot from the CD with no problem. I go through sysinstall all the way
through the part where I select what sources to install. Sysinstall writes
the MBR and fsck's the drive with no problem. But then when it goes to
install the source and packages from CD, it says it can't read the CD.

Any idea what's going on here?

Hi Mark,

Some cdrom drives read better than others and some read well only when
they want to.

It sounds like it could be one of two things:-

* Either your cdrom drive is fsckedor near about.

* Or you have a dodgy copy of 5.4.

Did you analyse the MD5 Checksum ??

Is the cdrom drive connected to the IDE channel, or is it SCSI.

Have you tried another cdrom drive?

The other option would be to get the 5.4 BOOT disk, boot from it and
install via the net.

Hope you come right.

Regards,

Gavin

Re: change mediaopt of NIC to full-duplex

Thanks to all for the helpful replies and pointers, I thought it would
have been more complicated than just editing a config file so I was
looking in the wrong places.

Cheers,

change mediaopt of NIC to full-duplex

2005-07-25 Thread Gavin McDougall

Hi there,

I need to set my network cards (Intel Pro 1000) to full-duplex.

I tried using ifconfig with the mediaopt option which worked, but only
temporarily.

I then downloaded mii-tool 'cos it wasn't in the ports collection but it
just gives me critical errors when I try to compile it.

Is there possibly another method that I can use on my FreeBSD server to
permanently change my NIC settings to full-duplex?

Thanks,
Gavin

I managed to fit disc1 on a standard 700MB CD.

Who can help me with ISO's

2005-07-11 Thread Gavin McDougall

Hi there,

I am based in Johannesburg, South Africa and would like to know if there
is anyone lurking in this list that could help me with making copies of
the FreeBSD 5.4 ISO's.

We suffer serious telecoms (bandwidth) disabilities in this country so
its a bit of a mission downloading these files.

I am willing to travel and will replace/supply the relevant CD-R's.

Thanks,
Gavin

FreeBSD Training

2005-07-08 Thread Gavin McDougall

Hi there,

Does anyone know of a company in Johannesburg, South Africa that
provides FreeBSD training courses?

There is a fortune of FreeBSD documentation and books available on the
web and could probably learn all there is to know in that manner.

However, my Boss is keen to throw some fundage into a commercial
training course that will enhance my knowledge and skills in areas
relevent to our business model.

So is there anything out there that caters for FreeBSD training in South
Africa?

Thanks,
Gavin
