If you want a good RAID controller, use Intel SRCZCR. It does RAID-5 and
if you had a defective controller and the controller was replaced, your
RAID would be intact.

I am speaking of SCSI RAID.

 queueing helps a lot? Are the drivers stable? Is it true
 hardware raid5?
