Thanks for that link. It's a good article. But
we're still not helping the OP.
To quote from this article:
Slap in your boot disk, select your options, and get
yourself up to the point of choosing your installation
method. Choose FTP install, and you should be
prompted to set up your network interface. Choose lp0,
So, where is he supposed to slap in this boot disk,
as he still has no FDD, and his BIOS won't boot from
CD-ROM?
Until someone invents hot-swappable motherboards
(gg), I don't see that he can do this either. The installation
program *has to be* executing in memory on the machine
to be installed.
Now, if some manufacturer's BIOS supported etherboot
via PLIP interface, I could see some possibilities, though it's
a rather desperate endeavor.
Or am I just really, really dense here?

Hi Guys,
I have a SOHO file server that's become rather grumpy during a move
[office to office]

it's a 5.1 system with 4 x Western Digital [WD800] hard drives [non
RAID] and it's giving me this error:

ad0: hard error cmd=read fsbn 86662543 of 86662574 status=51 error =40

the machine has experienced some hard resets over the last month due to
the monsoon season here in the tropics!

what is a quick work-around? is the drive dead? any suggestions?

sure. i realised i didn't explain just after i sent the mail. doh!

ok: i want really open access 'a-la-windows' style to all files under a
certain directory tree to users in a particular group. at the moment, i
am having to chown all files over to whom ever is editing them at any
given time.

//

path = /usr/wwwdev
create mode = 0765
valid users = @wwwdev

You might also need to set the directory mode on the share.
cool, what would you suggest?

i assume this is a ownership issue on the unix file system side,
although i have opened up the permissions to 'pants down in public'
level

drwxrwxrwx
-rwxrwxrwx

So, what is the problem? Do these permissions and/or the file ownerships
get altered when accessed by a Windows client?
i would have assumed that because the two users were in the same group
they could access the same files in turn without chown-ing.

Problems with ordinary user permissions

2003-10-19 Thread Anthony Carmody
Hi,

I have been having a trouble getting various things to work on my new
5.1 workstation with gnome 2.x.

tonight i was attemtping to get 'gtoaster' [cd buring s/w] working as i
couldnt see any drives, and when i tried adding them i encountered a few
errors muttering about permissions. so i logged on a root and low and
behold not only did i see all the CD drives, but i could also browse my
Network, something i have not been able to do.

what should do?

migrate to using 'root' for my everyday login, or somehow 'up' my
ordinary account..?

anyone have any suggestions on either idea and perhaps if i should
migrate how i could go about this...?

please 'CC' me directly on replys...

sure. and it's the 5th 5.1 machine i have built, just that i need this

Okay. These two problems are completely unrelated, and would be
easier to treat if you'd posted them as different messages.
For sound, please see the section in the FreeBSD handbook that talks
about the subject.
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html
yep. i unpacked my handbook, made a really strong espresso and i have
~s~o~u~n~d~.

For browsing your network, it depends what you're talking about.
Different protocols tend to use different applications, and you didn't
even mention whether you're using Microsoft protocols or standard ones.
ok, my fileserver is a 5.1 machine [as is this one] running samba. i
just want to be able to browse the folders in a similar fashion as
windo$e. Gnome seems to have a function to add network servers, except
that it dosent seem to work. in fact, it crashes. i'm thinking there
must be something i have overlooked in my network setup.

This sort of thing can happen occasionally between Mozilla updates.
One thing to try is moving aside your ~/.mozilla directory and

This is my 'top' as you can see a lot of mozilla-bin running, any suggestions will be highly

Yes -- all of your mozilla processes are stuck trying to startup and
running into some sort of problem reading the defaults. You should
kill off all of these processes before doing anything with your
~/.mozilla as above:

ok,

i am using 5.1 for 2 developemnt servers, 1 programming workstation. i.e: not

so, security and stability are not critical as far as i am concerened.

there is another important reason, my hardware tends to require later versions
of FreeBSD, for example: i am currently supplied with late model Intel P4
systems, they need 5.1 to run hyper-threading CPUs.

i hope that is some help.

Ethernet Drivers with 5.1 not happening

2003-09-28 Thread Anthony Carmody
Hiya,

I posted a question about this last week. I have done a little homework and
I am resubmitting my question with more information and i hope someone can
help this time around.

I am building a FreeBSD 5.1 box for a client using a fairly new ASUS
Mainboard, that SHOULD according to the HARDWARE.TXT file on my installer
CDROM, work with all the hardware chip-sets concerned. precisely, an Intel
82562EZ LAN PHY.

These are the relevant lines i get from pciconf -lv :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:8:0: class=0x202 card=0x80f81043 chip=0x10508086 rev=0x02
hdr=0x00
vendor = 'Intel Corporation'
class = network
subclass = ethernet

AND this is what i get from dmesg | more :

pci1: ACPI PCI bus on pcib1
pci1: network, ethernet at device 8.0 (no driver attached)

is there a way i might just install some drivers without reinstalling the
whole system? I think someone has made some recently, although i am not
familiar with the procedure of obtaining and installing them. I have
experience installing from ISO images and adding the odd port but not much
beyond that. Here is the link to the mailing.freebsd.cvs-current thread im

NIC card not showing up during 5.1 install

2003-09-24 Thread Anthony Carmody
i am building a new server for a client and my hardware vendor changed my usual
hardware profile to use an 800fsb ASUS
Mainboard, it runs the Intel 865G chipset. I have tried installing 5.1 but it cannot
see to onboard Ethernet and seems
to get upset running the mouse when the XF86 server starts up for some reason.

i have 2 bootable installer discs for 5.1 made from ISO images some months ago.

I had a look at the current HARDWARE.TXT in the first disc and the network card is
supported so it says

Intel 82562-based Fast Ethernet NICs

when i get the prompt during installation to configure network connections i only get
a sellection of four serial
connections PPP SLIP etc. I remember being given a choice of one NIC as well

so, does this mean it might be there somewhere? when i run a 'netstat -i' i cant see
anything that looks like a NIC.
Just serial ports etc. I assume this is only running interfaces, correct? what should
i be looking for?

RE: yahoo messenger

2003-09-24 Thread Anthony Carmody
well, i have not been able to connect for 24hrs myself.

I have heard rumours [gasp] that MSN and Yahoo are on a crusade to block third party
clients using their transport. i don't know the
weight of this in truth, but i must say that everyone i know who uses IM uses a third
party client primarily to avoid Ads and such.
I use gaim myself. perhaps its the company i keep.

Yahoo has officially updated messenger such that you can no longer connect
using the current freebsd yahoo port version ( 0.99.19.1 ). I just tried
to install their NEW package..

makayla# pkg_add fbsd4.ymessenger.tgz
pkg_add: could not find package gtk-1.2.3 !
pkg_add: could not find package glib-1.2.3 !
pkg_add: could not find package XFree86-3.3.6 !
pkg_add: could not find package gdk-pixbuf-0.8.0 !
pkg_add: could not find package gettext-0.11.1_1 !

I have the following installed.. which worked fine with version 0.99.19.1..
gtk-1.2.10_10
gtk-2.2.4
glib-1.2.10_10
glib-2.2.3
XFree86-4.3.0,1
gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0
gettext-0.12.1

While I know the maintainer of the messenger port will have dealt with
this issue before he commits the update, but why would Yahoo have released
a new version today against depandants that are almost 6 months old?

Michael
