RE: opinions on my plan
For mine I did the following: - Minimal install - kern_securelevel_enable=YES in rc.conf - recompiled kernel for ipf and take out extra crap - disabled inetd - disabled sendmail - used ipf and ipmon for firewall/nat My firewall is running on minimal hardware and it's a firewall.. I only want to mess with it once and be done with it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Darren Sent: Wednesday, January 01, 2003 11:49 AM To: fbsd-questions Subject: opinions on my plan I am building a firewall/NAT box for my father. This is the first firewall that I've built. And, I'm trying to put only the minimum software on it that will help me remote administer it (ie. ssh) and keep it up to date (ie. portupgrade). I figured I'd need a few programs installed for convenience. But, I didn't want to sacrafice security. I thought I might get the advice of those who have gone before me. Here is what I was thinking about installing: here's what I consider to be almost mandatory sshd cvsup portupgrade here's what I thought might add for obvious reasons squid (maybe ??) portsentry (maybe ??) ncftp (client only if I can find it) links I'm mostly concerned about cvsup and portupgrade because I see them as being next to mandatory. I think I could get along without them. But, I'm concerned about security risks associated with not being current. Do they pose more security risks than they might prevent by keeping me current? Another thing about portupgrade that concerns me is what it does to my kernel sources. I tried recompiling after having run portupgrade and pretty much hosed everything. I started over from scratch and recompiled first. I haven't put portupgrade back on, yet. I wanted to get opinions about it's risk:reward ratio first. I'm open to all suggestions, links or any other comments. This is new territory for me. RE: Squirrel Mail on freebsd
I just setup a FreeBSD 4.7 box, installed Postfix, Squirrelmail, IMAP-UW, and Cyrus-SASL from ports and everything worked fine. Well, I had to RTFM, which is never fun.. but.. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Doug Reynolds Sent: Monday, December 30, 2002 7:49 AM To: Luke Kyohere; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Squirrel Mail on freebsd On Mon, 30 Dec 2002 09:42:54 +0200, Luke Kyohere wrote: hello, Anyone know of any bugs when running (or trying to run) squirrelmail off a freebsd box? RE: L0phtcrack
For L0phtcrack to work, in my experience, you have to have some kind of administrator priv's on the box you're doing it on anyway, making this a rather moot point. You can use the pwdump utility that they suggest to remotely hash the SAM, but, again, this requires an administrator password. Here's a link to a site that will give you a utility to do it, but it costs money: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/product.cfm?id=265 Good luck. pini0n -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Kenzo Sent: Monday, December 23, 2002 5:34 PM Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: L0phtcrack Sorry guys, I didn't mean to be so rude. I just took the first couple replies the wrong way. Busy day and MX records not resolving correclty and stuff. I know that it sound suspicious to ask how to crack the windows password, but that is what I need to do, and I really don't have $300 bucks to pay for the new version of l0phcrack. Again the reason why I need this, is because a friend of mine forgot his windows XP admin password. and since it was the only account on there, he can't get back in. He can't affort to reload, because he got stuff on it that he need for school projects and stuff. I don't really know exactly what he's got in it, but he asked me if it was possible to retrieve the password or reset it. I told him it was possible and I've been trying for the last 2 days to do it. I tried the linux boot disk that suppose to reset the admin password, but that didn't work. I think it only works on 2000. then I booted from a win98 boot disk, then use dos ntfs to copy the sam file to a floppy and tried to use john to crack it. It sais that there's 0 passwords, But when I use a hash retriever, it list all the accounts. I noticed that there was a version of l0phtcrack on freebsd /usr/ports/security/l0phtcrack, and wanted to see if that helped, but I can't seem to find where it installs it and how I would use it. OK, I hope it was something like what you wanted to hear, even though it still sounds suspicious and I understand that. I'm an Admin myself. And for using hotmail accountComputer 101, never use your real or company e-mail address to post on forums, just attracks crackers. I guess it just depends on the person, I just prefer to use different e-mail accounts for work and personal stuff. I guest if you guys think that it's wrong to do so, please let me know why, cause I really can't think of any reasons. Again, sorry guys I didn't mean to offend you. - Original Message - From: Jimi Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Kenzo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 23, 2002 7:12 PM Subject: RE: L0phtcrack Not thatasking how to crack Windows passwords from a hotmail email box is just highly suspicious. Migrating Linux to FreeBSD
Hello all, Ive inherited control of two linux boxes at work which provide essentially nothing more than mail and ftp access to a bunch of external customers. We host their domains on these two servers and they either pop-off or access their email through squirrelmail. To make a really long story short, we're looking to setup two boxes in parallel, migrate the data, test for a week or so, and then switch the old boxes out. I know enough in Linux and FreeBSD to get by, but I have a bit more experience with FreeBSD and love how easy it is to install new apps, update apps, etc. My question is this: are there any known good procedures on how to migrate roughly 200 users on a RedHat 6.2 linux server over to a FreeBSD server? Im looking basically to retain their username/passwords and their mail. Everything else is going to be installed from scratch using FreeBSD 4.7. Thanks in advance for any ideas/help.
