Acer Laptop Bightness and Volume Hotkeys not working!

I have an Acer (S3-391) laptop, its a recent model with an SSD and HHD
for a very nice price.

I'm running FreeBSD 10-current, because of the wireless driver.

I notice I can't use the brightness hotkeys (Fn + Left/Right Arrows)
even with acpi_video...

Als has the subject states I can't use audio hotkeys too (Fn + UP/DOWN
arrows), but I'm not sure if I would need to load any extra module to
do this!

Can anybody advice on this?

Many Thanks,

Mike

The sound hotkey problem is fixed, I forgot to set my keyboard
Layout properly in KDE setting it to Acer Laptop fixed this!

But I still have the brightness issue, and xbacklight gives me this:

In turn I do a backup of the backup files once every week(Friday) to

This directory will eventually fill up and I need to make a check and

put in other words I never want more than 4 files to be in this directory.

My scripting skills are not at the level where I can figure this out, so
I'll appreciate suggestions on how to solve this in the correct way.

Hi Leslie!

I believe this is what you need:

--- START ---
#!/bin/sh

KEEP='5'

pg_dump -U gp /backups/gp.`date +%Y%m%d-%H%M%S`.sql

N=1
for file in `ls -r /backups/gp.*`
do
   [ $N -gt $KEEP ] rm -f $file
   N=`expr $N + 1`
done
--- END ---

I am using this to keep 5 backup files... Modify as needed.

Disable FIFO on UART

2013-05-05 Thread Miguel Barbosa Gonçalves
Hi!

Back in FreeBSD 7 there was a flag to disable the FIFO on the sio
device driver. From
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=sioapropos=0sektion=0manpath=FreeBSD+7.4-stablearch=defaultformat=html:

Meaning of flags:
0x1 shared IRQs
0x2 disable FIFO
0x4 no AST/4 compatible IRQ control register
0x8 recover sooner from lost output interrupts
0x00010 device is potential system console
0x00020 device is forced to become system console
0x00040 device is reserved for low-level IO (e.g. for remote kernel debugging)
0x00080 use this port for remote kernel debugging
0x0??00 minor number of master port
0x1 PPS timestamping on CTS instead of DCD
0x2 device is assumed to use a 16650A-type (extended FIFO) chip

Now with FreeBSD 8 which uses the UART device driver there's no option for that.

I am looking to reduce the jitter I am getting on the serial port when
connecting a GPS to the server.

Can anyone help?

Miguel

Your best bet is to poll the mobile list (CC'd) to see if anyone was able to
get FreeBSD working on this laptop (or even to know whether this is a lost

not work and with 8.0-RELEASE being in it's final stages, it's unlikely you
can get some priority from the developers for it being a regression bug. The
acpi and missing disk can be related (most likely are), but unless you get at
least a live FS working (even the USB image for 8.0-BETA2) it will be hard to
get an acpidump(8). So this really depends on someone knowledgeable having
this laptop or BIOS tricks that get you to a stage where more info can be
 gathered and saved/snapshot.

Ok, I understand chances to have it running in the short term are not high :-)
Anyway, and since I am replying to the mobile list, I am available to
provide more
information about the laptop. I have Linux running on it and I believe there is
something similar to the acpidump (not sure if its the same tool as in FreeBSD
or if their outputs are compatible) that I could use to provide some
more details.

Problems with FreeBSD installation

2009-08-05 Thread Miguel
Hi,

I've been trying to install FreeBSD in my laptop, but without success. I
started with 7.2, but during installation i got the error:

No disk found! Please verify that your disk controller...

Looking at the logs, everything seems fine to me (although its my first time on
the FreeBSD world). I get lines such as:

atapci0: ATI IXP600 SATA300 controller [...]
atapci0: [ITHREAD]
atapci0: AHCI Version 01.10 controller with 4 ports detected

[...]

(Note that i wrote these logs manually -- got some photos that I can upload to
some URL if needed.)

So, could not find any issues in the logs, apart from some ACPI errors:

acpi0_check: nexus0 attached
acpi0_check: acpi0 not-present
acpi0_check: acpi0 not-present
acpi0_check: acpi0 not-present
acpi0_check: acpi0 not-present
...

in fact, I have some other ACPI-related errors at the beginning of the logs, but
these are common also on Linux -- I believe these are due to a buggy BIOS, which
unfortunately I am not able to upgrade since I have not windows installed (I
have a Toshiba Satellite A210).

Anyway, I decided to try a more recent version of FreeBSD and downloaded

  8.0-CURRENT-200906-amd64-disc1.iso

which was the most recent snapshot for my Turion64 processor.

Tried to boot it but this time the installation just freeze before the install
application event starts. Last log lines are:

acpi0: Could not initialise SystemIO handler: AE_NOT_EXIST
device_attach: acpi0 attach returned 6
Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec
md0: Preload image /boot/mfsroot 4194304 bytes at 0x80fd8660
SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched!
WARNING: WITNESS option enabled, expect reduced performance.
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md0
warning: no time-of-day clock registered, system time will not be set accurately

And at this point... nothing else -- system freezes.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions for me to have a FreeBSD
installation on my laptop. I am, of course, available to provide any additional
information you might need to debug the issue.

Thanks!

Can you try booting with ACPI disabled?  It should be option 2 from

Yes, I tried that already with same results.

Can you try the installation media on another machine (to rule out a
 bad CD or bad burn)?

The CD image seems to be fine (both of them): I have installed them on a Linux
kvm virtual machine and there were no problems -- both are able to do the
complete installation and I am able to boot the resulting image.

(Sorry, no other physical machines available at the moment.)

Also, is it possible to upgrade the BIOS on the problem machine?

I would love to upgrade my BIOS but I am unable to do that -- I have not Windows
installed and my vendor requires Windows to be installed in order to perform the
upgrade (yes, I know! I will never buy another laptop from them!)

I have not tried 8.0-BETA (as someone on the IRC channel suggested) but not sure
if it will make any difference. As far as I understand, the snapshot I tried is
more recent than 8.0-BETA2. Or am I wrong? Is it worth downloading one more
ISO just to try it?

The -BETA, -BETA1, -BETA2 images are run the same way -RELEASE images
are -- once the image is released, there are no further updates to it.
That is why when you download a -RELEASE, any patches that may have
been released afterwards are not reflected in the install image.

For what it's worth, I tried the -BETA2 image on my laptop, and the
ndis driver was causing panics.  I used 7.2-RELEASE to install the OS,
and rebuilt world/kernel from my build machine using NFS, and the
 panics went away.

After rereading your original question, you were using a -CURRENT
snapshot to install -- -BETA2 was released a few weeks ago.  It may
have the problem fixed, yes, but it is not guaranteed.  To answer your
question, is it worth downloading...: that depends.  If you're
willing to waste another CD if it fails, is up to you, but your
problem may be fixed in -BETA2.

Yes, I understand -- just realised that BETA2 is more recent than the snapshot I
tried. Most probably, I'll just wait until 8.0 is actually released. My
problem with trying BETA2 is that it will take long time to get it (slow
connection here) and most probably my problem will remain.

Isn't there a way (an easy way, I mean!) to get a custom kernel from freebsd.org
that I could replace in my ISO?

Ok, some updates: I downloaded 8.0-BETA2 ISO and the result was exactly the
same, i.e., system freezes during CD boot in the same point as before. This
time I did not actually tried to install the CD on a virtual machine, but I can
not believe it is a problem with the CD image ;-)

This time I disabled _everything_ I could disable in my BIOS and selected
several options from the boot manager: the default option, the option with ACPI
disabled, the option safe-mode (or something like that...) and finally the
verbose option, which gave me some more information. Here's the last messages
I see in the console before freeze:

start_init: trying /sbin/init
start_init: trying /sbin/oinit
start_init: trying /sbin/init.bak
start_init: trying /rescue/init
start_init: trying /stand/sysinstall

And that's all. Any ideas? :-(

usb external hd question

2008-02-26 Thread Miguel Giral
Hi

I bought an external usb hd but i can just get FreeBSD (both 6.2 and 7)
to recognice it if the drive is switched on and plugged in during system
boot up. Case in which i get the drive detected with both partitions i
made in it. (da0 da0s1 da0s2)
If i switch it on in an already running system, only an empty usb device
is created (da0). Anything i could do for FreeBSD to detect both
partitions if i switch the drive on in a already booted up system?

also, a side question. When attaching a geli provider, i get this:

GEOM_ELI: Device ad4s3.eli created.
GEOM_ELI: Encryption: Blowfish-CBC 256
GEOM_ELI: Crypto: software
WARNING: Expected rawoffset 14548865, found 14548865

i've been getting it since i edited the label of ad4s3.eli
I don't really know if it's a bad thing to get that warning, since both
numbers are the same. just wondering.

Thank you,
-M

Problems installing icu from the ports tree

2007-12-18 Thread Miguel Arroz

Hi!

I'm a FreeBSD newbie, and I need a little help on installing
software.

When I try to install postgresql or vim from the ports tree, I get
the following error:

===Verifying install for icui18n in /usr/ports/devel/icu
===  Building for icu-3.6

*** config.status has become stale ***
'configure' and/or 'uversion.h' have changed, please
do 'runConfigureICU' (or 'configure') again, as per
  the readme.html.

exit 1

I have deleted all the tree and reinstalled the most current one,
but the error keeps happening.

I'm probably doing something dumb, but what?

The same steps with RoFreeSBIE works!!. But from FBSD6.2:

#pciconf -lv

outputs:

class=0x028000 card=0x1375103c chip=0x431114e4 rev=0x02 hdr=0x00
vendor='Broadcom Corporation'  class=network

As you can see, there is already a memory address for broadcom, so, when I
try to load bcmwl5_sys, there are memory address problems. I'd like to know
if my theory is correct or just sucks. And if that is correct what could I
do?.

Thanks, this is the third time that I send this message.(this time with
firefox)

Re: php failing to produce phpinfo()

Suddenly, my browser started acting funny. I don't know how to use
the repair disk to fix a problem, so I reinstalled FreeBSD-6.1. It
still works the same except I can't get phpinfo() to display in the
browser. I can do php -i, which displays several pages of PHP code.
That means PHP is working. I don't use CGI or PHP scripts. If
phpinfo() doesn't show up in my browser, I can't do anything.

The following is in /usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf:

LoadModule php5_module
AddModule mod_php5.c
DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
DirectoryIndex index.html
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

The httpd.error.log doesn't show any problems. Thre are 35 modules in
/usr/local/libexec/apache including libphp5.so and httpd.exp. Php.ini
is installed at /usr/local/lib

This time I installed mysql-5.1, apache-1.3 and PHP-5.1. I used
pkg_add -r to install apache and mysql. Apache and mysql work
excellent. I installed PHP from www.php.net. Both PHP4 and PHP5 would
fail to load the phpinfo() file. I installed PHP-5.1 from the ports
directory. Same problem. I ordered FreeBSD-6.1, before it was
available. The FreeBSD Mall had it, but wasn't promoting it yet.

About 2 years ago when I first installed FreeBSD-6.1, I installed
mysql-4.0, PHP-4 and apache-1.3 on FreeBSD-6.1. I used pkg_add -r
to install apache and mysql and I downloaded PHP-4 from www.php.net.
Everything worked, including PHP. Two years ago, www.php.net was
supplying any version of PHP including older versions of PHP-4. I
installed older versions because they worked.

Now www.php.net only supplies the latest version.

thanks for any help,
bob

Hello,

First change sasl options, then forcefully recompile it with depending
ports. Asuming you've chosen SASL2 option for Postfix:

  # cd /usr/ports/security/cyrus-sasl2
  # make config
[choose MYSQL option]
  # portupgrade -f -r cyrus-sasl2

Hi Miguel,

I use portupgrade and portsnap, a combination which seems to work
fine. The only thing that annoys me about portupgrade is that it's
written in Ruby, and when it's time for an upgrade I always have to
upgrade the Ruby compiler as well. Upgrading Ruby just takes forever
on these old battered beige boxes.

Hello to all.

I need to model data bases, so, my question is if some of you could know

just installed pydbdesigner, but doesn't fit my needs at all, in fact,
nothing at all.

Thanks in advance.

This works for me:

$kldload snd_driver
$cat /dev/sndstat

then you will see the correct sound driver, and add that in
/boot/loader.conf

my case:

ofuscado# kldload snd_driver

ofuscado# cat /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:

snd_ich (1p/1r/0v channels duplex default)

If you are in wheel, then you should be able to sudo su to switch to
the root account and then passwd root to reset the password.

No luck, this is the error

Re: Convert numbered JPG files to movie

2006-05-14 Thread Miguel Ramos

Well, perhaps what you want is MJPEG, which is a packed file with each
frame being a JPEG image. Check the MJPEG Wikipedia article and if you
google for MJPEG you'll find an MJPEG howto on sourceforge.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, an MJPEG file or stream is just a MIME packed
stream of JPEG images with content type of multipart/x-mixed-replace.
If that is so, you could probably produce an MJPEG file simply by using
mpack, and the howtos you may find are for more complicated cases such
as converting and MJPEG stream to MPEG.

It may not work, but if you succeed in packing/unpacking MJPEG streams
with mpack, I would be interested in knowing it because I will be
decoding one such stream within a couple of monthes.

Re: Bind as a chaching nameserver

2006-04-26 Thread Miguel Ramos

AND make sure that either /etc/resolv.conf doesn't exist or that it
contains a single nameserver line like this:

nameserver 127.0.0.1

otherwise your local nameserver isn't queried.

You see, there's really nothing else to do on a standard installation of
freebsd...
1- named_enable=YES in /etc/rc.conf
2- either delete /etc/resolv.conf or use nameserver 127.0.0.1

The default /etc/namedb/named.conf that comes installed does exactly
what you want.

DBMS.

Sugestion #3
- split your web app in two parts: cgi scripts (or apache module) and a
server app that keeps data in memory and responds to requests made by
cgi scripts. Communication between the two can be made with pipes,
sockets, shared memory or whatever you like.

Sugestion #4
- load less data from the database; only that which you need to generate
output. (For example, for an SQL database, use WITH, HAVING, OFFSET and
LIMIT wisely).

Any more sugestions?

Yes, and probably the 8 hour lag was your fault... I was also quite
happy at first, they have some problems though - custom dns is a bit
broken, sometimes the zone file misteriously vanishes when you change
it. They lack some features which, without giving them any more trouble,
would make a much better service: like allowing the mix of custom dns
and url and email redirection.

AFAIK, the perfect registrar is yet to be born... It would be easy to
provide better service than them, if you were on that line of
business...

[...]
I assume what should happen is

   - I buy a domain from registrar X
   - X sets that domain to point to my dns server as the master server
   - X hosts a secondary dns server

*Some* registrars offer free secondary dns hosting, yes, mine does,
gandi.net.

   - I can then add subdomains to my domain which will directly
propagate on the internet, set the various MX and ilk to whatever I
want etc. without having to contact a 3rd party

   My further assumptions are
   - The secondary server will either update from my server directly OR
I will need to contact X to add anything new for me.

Secondaries update from your server, initiating a zone transfer when
they feel like it. Sending them a notify may also trigger the transfer,
but not immediatly.
I have a free secondary dns for anjos.strangled.net on rollernet.us, and
it only updates from my server at most once a day (just about what I
need, but comes close to being useless).

   My questions are -
  a) Are my assumptions correct?
  b) What would be the best way to explain this to a phone drone?

Impossible. If the services you need (secondary dns) are not listed on
their website then they won't offer the service either because they
don't understand its usefulness or because it's against their interest.

  c) Can anyone recommend a good registrar that will be able to set
this up with minimum fuss (and cost)?

Check mine, http://www.gandi.net. Not cheap on .com, .net, .org domains,
cheap on .info and .name. Anyway, they offer secondary dns and custom
dns (if you come to the conclusion that it's best to leave the zone
files outside your computer).

I'm not entirely satisfied, mainly because they offer email redirection,
secondary dns and custom dns, but each of these mutually excludes the
other ones.

There's also freedns.afraid.org, if you want to put your domain on a
good, redundant server, and perhaps only host third level domains on
your computer (they allow you to define NS records, and they also offer
dynamic dns services).

Rollernet.us offers besides secondary dns, backup mx for free.

  d) Are there any good reasons not to do it this way (remember, this
is not a mission critical setup, and its main purpose is to tinker)

Well,
- if you plan to have your main server down for more than a week
(default value in SOA record), then your zone will expire, even on
secondaries.
- if you're on a dynamic IP, then you'll have trouble with most
registrars.

Perhaps a more flexible option may be having a second level domain on a
freedns service (like freedns.afraid.org) and one or more third level
domains hosted at your server.

But buy a domain, try it, and see what suits you.

Also, if you only meen to tinker, try this, using only free services
(this is what I use for my home computer, anjos.strangled.net):
1- get a subdomain at freedns.afraid.org, say yourhome.afraid.org
2- configure three records on your subdomain like this:

yourhome.afraid.org NS yourhome.afraid.org.
yourhome.afraid.org NS ns1.rollernet.us.
yourhome.afraid.org NS ns2.rollernet.us.
yourhome.afraid.org A yourip (may be dynamic)

3- configure your zone file, yourhome.afraid.org, with at least the
following:

@ NS yourhome.afraid.org.
@ NS ns1.rollernet.us.
@ NS ns2.rollernet.us.
@ A yourip (may be dynamic)

and perhaps,

@ MX 0 yourhome.afraid.org.
@ MX 10 mail.rollernet.us.
@ MX 10 mail2.rollernet.us.

4- go to rollernet.us and activate secondary dns (and backup mx) for
your domain.

This is the best I could come up with for me.

Sugestion #2: Peek on other people's setups using a combination of
WHOIS, dns lookups and reverse lookups to find out which services they
use.

qmail is very good doing that , if you need smtp-auth, domain-keys, ospf

i want to know in advance before install the port, is there something
like emerge -pv in gentoo?, with this i mean a user friendly command, i
already know that doing a make search key=xxx and look at the B-DEPS and
R-DEPS lines you see them, but you have to search for your especific
port among the multitud of matches, BTW, what the diference between them?

something like this would be great

# cd /usr/ports/lang/php5
# make show_deps (or similar)

Miguel, you have not yet confirmed the two

Yes, thay are identical, except for he shared_buffers,

another issue pops to my mind: on 4.x i had to tweak some sysctl's
regarding shared-memory ( default settings would not allow PGSQL to
claim as much as i would like ). i don't know if this still needs to
be done on 6.x. if i recall correctly, postgresql would not start if
it could not allocate it's shared buffers. things may have changed:
check you postgresql.log to see if it is complaining.

please let us know if you achieved any speed update at all.

i increased the shred_buffers to 35% of fisical RAM, that doesnt helped
very much, neither do fsync off.

Well there you go then..you're trying to access a file that is larger
than RAM, so naturally you won't be able to fit it all in RAM, and
with 1GB less RAM in your system you'll spend much more time reading
bits of it from disk and later throwing them away.

i know a bit of databases, and assume you do as well, so i am hesative
to question your explanation but:

the importing of a DB-file ( being tab-sep-copies or SQL dumps ) is a
transformation process and does not require all data to be in core (
is that the right terminology? ) at the same moment. it transform x
Gigs of input to y Gigs of output. i don't see why the 2GB machine
would suffer this hard.

unless the 3GB-file is one big table. is it MIguel?

Yes, it is a dump of a single table. i want to tranfer the data from one
server to another, and this is one of the biggest table.

i will have to wait on the .conf files, Miguel has not claimed them to
be identical, so i am curious.

I have jdk 1.4 and tomcat 5.0 on FreeBSD 4.11-Release running now for

shiva2# grep 514 /etc/services
syslog 514/udp

that is the syslog port for remote hosts' events , you can disable it
adding this to your rc.conf

syslog_flags=-ss

setting shmmax for postgres

2006-03-20 Thread Miguel

Hi, how can i set the shmmax parameter in freebsd 6.1?

i tried this in /etc/sysctl.conf

kern.ipc.shmmax=1147483647

shiva2# sysctl -a kern.ipc.shmmax
kern.ipc.shmmax: 2147483647

but postgres always fails with this error

The PostgreSQL documentation contains more information about shared
memory configuration.

FATAL: could not create shared memory segment: Cannot allocate memory
DETAIL: Failed system call was shmget(key=5432001, size=1149067264, 03600).
HINT: This error usually means that PostgreSQL's request for a shared
memory segment exceeded available memory or swap space. To reduce the
request size (currently 1149067264 bytes), reduce PostgreSQL's
shared_buffers parameter (currently 137626) and/or its max_connections
parameter (currently 200).

do i have to recompile the kernel ?

Just how much RAM do you have in the machine? I don't think you can
allocate more than 256MB or so to SysV shared memory without tuning
the number of KVA pages being allocated to the kernel...? Maybe it
depends on whether the SysV shmem segments are wired down by default
or not, I think there's a sysctl which controls that.

I have 3G of RAM

You should revert Postgres back to a more reasonable default shared
region size for now and rebuild the kernel to increase these
parameters if you actually have the RAM and the need to do so.

HP DL380 G3 and SMP with 6.0

2006-03-09 Thread Miguel
Hi, i just installed Freebsd 6.0-release in a dl380 g3 dual xeon 2.4,
after the install i edited generic and commented out the I486 and I586,
this is my dmesg,

CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz (2390.70-MHz 686-class CPU)

so i only left I686

machine i386
#cpuI486_CPU
#cpuI586_CPU

ident NAP

and i also added these for SMP (the I/O APIC line was already there)

# To make an SMP kernel, the next line is needed
options SMP # Symmetric MultiProcessor Kernel

device apic# I/O APIC

after that i rebooted with the new kernel, i dont see the second
processor, HT is disabled in hte bios:

  interfaces.

In a few key areas FreeBSD is a better desktop
OS than Linux: Easier to keep
the kernel/world and installed ports up to date
  for example without having
to resort to the microsoft/Linux fixall method
  of removing and reinstalling

My guess is because donations(cash) and

come from people who want servers while people
who want a desktop OS tend to
  donate squat

The linux developers really have been trying

One Linux distribution in particular that I

Advertising Linux in a FreeBSD mailing list?
Sounds like you may have more of
axe to grind against the FreeBSD management

Why not just tell the truth, which is that
Windows XP is the best that you can do for the
 desktop

Well, that's your opinion. For me, FreeBSD is a much better desktop than
Windows -- it runs solid and fast and enables me to be more productive
in my work. Of course, what is good for me might not be so good for
someone else, I guess it depends on your needs.

Some Linux distros are much easier to setup than FreeBSD, so they might
be a more recommendable desktop for someone with less technical
knowledge.

I've upgraded to 6.0-RELEASE yesterday but the symptoms remain...
Attached is the backtrace of the crash dump and the relevant portion
 of /var/log/messages.

My custom kernel is the generic kernel plus support for quotas.

Also, during last buildworld I got a segmentation fault (only thing I
 have in /etc/make.conf is CFLAGS= -O -pipe and NO_PROFILE= true). I
then tried it again (in the exact same conditions), and it worked. Don't
know if that might indicate bad RAM (the only memory test I'm able to
run is memtest but it can only lock (to test) about 15% of the total
 system memory...).

Since I got no answers, I'll reply to myself ;)

I have now replaced the memory, but the problem persists. So I guess
it's highly unlikely that the problem is with the RAM. I started saving

FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE - panic: page fault

2005-12-12 Thread Miguel Saturnino
Hi!

My server reboots sporadically (once a day, maximum) and I hope someone
can shed some light on why this is happening.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Miguel

System upgrade questions

2005-11-26 Thread Miguel Saturnino
Hi!

I have a FreeBSD 5.3 release system which was upgraded with CVSup to
RELENG_5. I have recently built a new kernel, but *have not* rebuilt
world. The computer now says it's a FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE system.

This can't be right, can it? :/

I think I have two options:
  * downgrade the sources to RELENG_5_3 with CVSup (replacing
RELENG_5 with RELENG_5_3 in the supfile) and build a new FreeBSD
5.3 kernel
or
  * rebuild world to have a FreeBSD 5.4 base system and kernel
correct?

If I opt for the second option, should I rebuild world everytime
there's a version bump in FreeBSD?

TIA!

Best regards,
Miguel

I think you should go for the second option.

yes - you should rebuild world everytime, untill you exactly know what
 has been changed in sources.

Thanks for your answer!

Here again - we have questions that are answered in the Handbook and the
 FAQ.

If the handbood TELLS you you need to buildworld, why would you think
 you would not?

I know - it's because YOU think the handbook is lying.

 Go back and READ.

Thanks for your answer.

FYI, I do not think the handbook is lying. I have read most of the
handbook, but it was not clear to me that I should not track RELENG_5
unless I was prepared to rebuild world whenever necessary (which might
not be trivial as this is a remote system accessible only by ssh).

6.0 install problems in HP DL380 Array 5i

2005-11-09 Thread Miguel
Hi, im having some problems when installing freebsd 6.0 in a DL380 with
smart array 5i controller, i have a RAID 1 using two 36G disks,
i can create the slide and partition without problems, when sysinstall
is installing the doc part, this messages suddently appear in screen:

Write failure on transfer ! (Wrote -1 bytes of 1425408 bytes), after
pressing the ok button, this appears:

Unable to transfer the doc distribution from acd0

acd0 is the cdrom, according to dmesg:

acd0: CDROM COMPAQ CD-ROM at at0-master PIO4

i did check the media and it is ok:

shiva1 var # md5sum -c CHECKSUM.MD5
6.0-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso: OK
6.0-RELEASE-i386-disc2.iso: OK

I dont know if this is related to my other post about the hang on boot,
you can read it here:

http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=freebsd-questionsm=113147447325120w=2

I decided to try a ftp install, sysinstall finished without any problem.
Now when im rebooting the server, it hangs for about 2 minutes, exactly
at this line:

[...dmesg output...]
Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec
acd0: CDROM COMPAQ CD-ROM SN-124/N104 at ata0-master PIO4
da0 at ciss0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
da0: COMPAQ RAID 1 VOLUME OK Fixed Direct Access SCSI-0 device
da0: 135.168MB/s transfers
da0: 34727MB (71122560 512 byte sectors: 255H 32S/T 8716C)

After the 2 minutes hang, the server booted in the normal way, i dont
see any error messages. This also happened when i was trying to install
with the cd, sysinstall started after the 2 minutes delay but i got the
error described above. This make nervous about some conflict or
potential problem with the hardisk or cdrom or even the array
controllers somewhere, i dont have any clue about what could be my
problem, and i have to have running in production this server by the
weekend, any hints?

Re: hi list

2005-09-09 Thread Miguel Cárdenas
hello

go to http://www.mysql.com and download the sources (4.1) and in the FreeBSD
section in downloads take a look at FreeBSD downloads (platform notes), click
on platform notes.

basicly, the only difference with compilation under FreeBSD is the way you
configure the makefiles and environment variables:

CC=gcc CFLAGS=-O2 -fno-strength-reduce \
CXX=gcc CXXFLAGS=-O2 -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions \
-felide-constructors -fno-strength-reduce \

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql --enable-assembler

gmake
gmake install

these are just the differences, you MUST follow ALL STEPS in the README and
INSTALL-SOURCE guides, just use the environment variables I included and the
parameters to the ./configure, otherwise the compilation WILL FAIL.

I installed it from source and works fine, but the special setup for FreeBSD

Re: MYSQLD mysql-server for 5.2.1

2005-09-09 Thread Miguel Cárdenas
Try to find mysql* using find command, maybe the location is not included into
the PATH variable, so you should do it in ~/.profile or something like

regards

 I installed mysql-server and mysql-clients but can't
find the mysqld executable to start the mysql server.

What is it that I'm missing?

 Thanks guys

/etc/profile and PATH

2005-08-31 Thread Miguel Cárdenas
Hello list

I have set some environment vars in /etc/profile such as PATH QTDIR (for Qt)
LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc. All variables are setup successfully except PATH that
remains unchanged...

I tried to setup PATH in ~/.profile and now is updated but how can I setup
this variable system wide? specifically want to add the Qt and MySQL binary
directories to the PATH...

Thanx

FreeBSD 5.2.1 and Qt library

2005-08-30 Thread Miguel Cárdenas
Hello list...

I have a little problem compiling Qt-based programs, when running 'make' get
the following error:

bash$ make
( cd /src/moc ; make )
cd: can't cd to /src/moc
*** Error code 2

and then stops. Am using the Qt that comes with the FreeBSD 5.2.1

Note that the program compiles perfectly under Linux, so it is not the
project.pro configuration file generated by qmake, it tries to 'cd /src/moc'
that obviously does not exist.

I asked on Trolltech mailing list and they said it was a distribution problem,
so that I should ask at FreeBSD mailing list... they suggested me to check
for the QTDIR environment variable, and it is not set...

How can I setup the QTDIR variable? I did it by hand using export in bash
shell, but want to do it automatically while booting, which script or
configuration file should I use? In Linux I use /etc/profile but am new to
FreeBSD, just am porting a Qt software...

Thanks!!!

Hi. I am not sure the status of it for AMD64, but I do know it requires
Java. Unfortunately there is no Java for AMD64 yet.

I had no problems building jdk15 and eclipse on my AMD64 box. I used
eclipse for a couple of hours and deleted it after that because it was
still too slow for my taste, but it worked fine in my limited testing.

PIM-SSM+DiffServ+SHISA

2005-07-12 Thread Tiago Miguel Amaral de Sousa
Hello

I am facing, for too long, the follow problem:
I want to implement in my local testbed the PIM-SSM protocol (with success), the
diffserv model (failed) and the shisa (success). The problem is in the diffserv
model:

It is possible to implement the diffserv model, with ALTQ, in the freebsd 5.4
release? I am asking this because I can compile the kernel (KAME) with the altq
options but when I am configuring the /etc/rc.conf file, namely when I enable
the ipv6_enable and/or ipv6_gateway_enable the follow error occurs:

in6_if2idlen:unknown link type (34)
in6_if2idlen:unknown link type (249)
in6_if2idlen:unknown link type (244)

I know these are only warnings but when they occur I can not ping other
computers (only direct attached links) and the computer doesn’t make forward of
packets. If I comment those two options the warnings disappear but, obviously,
I still unable to send/receive pings.

Anybody knows what is wrong?

I´ve tried to install an old version of freebsd, 4.11, and another error occurs
(in all the computers):

ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - reseting
ata0: resetting devices…

I don’t know what more can I do…

I would appreciate any help…

Thanks…

Tiago Sousa

I don't know if this might be the source of my problems but both
drivers (ahc and drm) seem to disregard the device.hints, so I
couldn't try to assign distinct irqs to the two cards.

Has anybody succeeded to run an ATI Radeon 7000 AGP on FreeBSD 5.4
 with DRI/DRM?

My setup is similar to yours, except I have a 19160 instead. With Xorg
6.7.0 and dri 5.x it worked like a charm. After the upgrade to 6.8.x
and dri 6.x I can no longer use dri/glx. Something fishy I noticed, as
soon as I do an ls on an xterm using antialised fonts the system goes
south (read: total freeze), but it seems to survive a bit longer when I
use plain jane fonts. Doesn't work anyway. I've been pondering
reverting to Xorg 6.7 + dri 5.x as a temporary solution. Xorg 6.8.2 +
dri 5.x doesn't work either. You might try the freebsd-x11@ mailing
list or contacting Eric Anholt (anholt@), who is the main Xorg/DRI on
FreeBSD guru.

Hi list, i have heard a lot of good things about opteron servers, im
going to upgrade several old production servers (thinking on hp dl145 or
sun v20z, sugestions?), is the amd64 port stable enough to use it on
production?, what about performance, will i see a plus if i buy opteron
isntead of xeons?.
Can you point me to some docs about it?, the archives are very messed up
