You can do all of this with amanda and simply run your backup from cron.

I just installed a fresh copy of freebsd 5.4.

What is the max length of the name field for an entry in /etc/passwd?
If the name is too long, /usr/sbin/pwd_mkdb will fail with an error so i
need to know how long it can be.
